Lillian Bassman was an irreverent and fantastic American photographer and painter who lived between June 1917 and February 2012. She has grown in Brooklyn and studied at textile Manhattan high school. With her master, the Russian Alexey Brodovitch, started to photograph models in black and white.

Trenders Magazine Harper’s Bazaar was where most of his work was published between 1950 and 1965. Disillusioned by the costuming in late 60s she started to get tired of fashion photographs. She made the decision to dispose of her career, quite literally in an aggressive and determined way.

She wiped out decades of work by destroying or send to the garbage their negatives and prints. Her era of furtive eroticism was over and and it seemed that it would not return. A bag with some of her work was discovered 20 years later. Her fashion work was being appreciated again.

She went back to their old projects. At 90s created a new work series based on Photoshop and manipulation. The highest qualities of her work are the high contrasts between light and dark, geometric placement, camera angles and the graininess of the finished photos were their biggest qualities.

It is one of the world’s leading photographer. Bassman became one of the last great woman photographers in the world of fashion.

She met her future husband photographer, Paul Himmel (born 1914), at Coney Island, the seaside resort at age six. They met again at 13, and started living together when she was 15. They were married in 1935; Himmel died in 2009 after 73 years of marriage.
