My Fashion Guilty Pleasures: Donna Karan Show by Janet Morais
Donna Karan has been a part of my wardrobe since my college years, I vividly recall carrying a DKNY bag around campus with a certain designer label pride. I have watched brand develop into a sophisticated line filled with drama & elegance.
Donna Karan has mastered the balance of structured and soft. She opened her 30th– anniversary show with the drama I have long been waiting for.
The first twelve or so exits were mixed superbly tailored jackets, coats, and blazers, mostly belted at the waist, with swishy, sheer skirts that hit mid-calf and the killer and my favorite over the knee boots.
The best reflected the energy of a buzzing city skyline, with cutouts and embroideries mimicking the sporadic grid of lights.
Evening was Karan to the core, too, with sensual halter dresses made of artfully draped chiffon (although Karan famously claims to have failed draping at Parsons) and slim, devoré velvet columns in striking gold, ruby, and plum.
“Thirty years later, I see style as an evolution,” Karan wrote in her show notes. “A unique reflection of who you are, where you’ve been, and where you’re going.” Then, as always, “The journey continues . . .” ..She too see her brand as journey.
By the way , I still have the DKNY bag in my closet.
With love,
