Four Key Topics to Know When Attending the Kentucky Derby
For the first day of Kentucky Derby, we give you the Four Key Topics to Know When Attending to this famous event.
#1. The Hats
In the name of fashion, the majestic and extravagant women’s hats are almost more important at the Kentucky Derby than the horses themselves.
Women search for months before the Derby for the perfect hat to parade around with at the race. Common sightings in Kentucky Derby hat couture are bright colors, large bows, wide brims, flowers and feathers.
Beautiful, deep blue Peacock feathers are used frequently to adorn the hats and are reminiscent of KOKET’s Divine Armoire, which is delicately covered in Peacock feathers.
#2. The Horses
Of course the Kentucky Derby would not be such without the horses. The entire day and tradition is planned around watching “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports,” so knowing the horses and betting on one is a must.
You don’t even have to officially bet to claim a horse, just pick out one you like with your friends and prepare to scream the name when the race begins. The Rose Garland, a staple at the Derby, is awarded to the winner of the race.
This year, KOKET picks Dance with Fate for the seductive name and dark, sleek muscles similar to the sleek lines and curves of the Chandra chair.
#3. The Mint Julep
For almost 100 years, the Mint Julep has been the signature drink of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. Spectators sip this whiskey cocktail from the sidelines made from sugar, water, mint, whiskey and garnished with a sprig of mint. Almost 120,000 are served each year during the Kentucky Derby weekend.
For those of you who are not whiskey fans, in 2006 the Derby introduced the Grey Goose Oaks Lily which contains the well-known vodka and cosmopolitan mix.
The Lily is a magenta color, much like the satin background of KOKET’s Mademoiselle Armoire.
#4. The Party
The Kentucky Derby weekend is like one big party.
Not only is it time for high fashion but it is also a time for fun. Entertain guests by planning a derby themed party. Need help coming up with ideas?
