Love happens had the pleasure to speak with Peter to get to know his ideas, what inspires him and what makes him one of the top designers in the United Kingdom.
With a completely open mind to always wanting to learn, fully in the knowledge that I will never know it all, and that I can pick up design inspiration in the unlikeliest of places, through the unlikeliest of people.
Also to always keep pushing creative boundaries & not stand still, as you are always as good as your last design!
What do you love about your work?
The fact that I get the opportunity to truly transform the feeling, soul & character of a space in a positive way, and influence the way people live. What surrounds us can hugely influence the way we feel & how we interact with those around us.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Everywhere possible, but mainly through travel. I try to travel as much as I can, to understand how different cultures live.
I love city breaks, drawing inspiration in design from many bustling cities around the world. Even between London, Paris, Barcelona & Milan, which is only a small corner of the world, you can see a great mix & variety of cultures, architecture, design & fashion between these cities, and how they live & interact as a culture.
What do you love to do in your spare time? What are your hobbies?
Spending time with my family, but design is my main hobby. I travel with my fiancé Claire for work a lot as she is also involved in the business with me, so we try & find inspiration for work & design whilst spending time together, especially hotels, as they tend to push the design boundaries.
Music for me is also a huge love, and something I also believe can be an intrinsic part of interiors, especially in commercial spaces. I used to DJ a lot, so searching out new & varied music to fit the space & environment is always fun when I have time.
Plus our 9 year old boy also keeps us busy!
An abstract piece of art – to open peoples minds and remind them there is always more behind the surface, in the hope that it may help eradicate prejudice in the world.
Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about? Any new projects?
My own house is currently exciting, for the reason that it is great to strip the house back to bare brick, unravel over a 100 years of history, then re-layer it with chic contemporary design.
I am also working on 2 very large English country homes, which I am transforming room by room, taking them both from traditional country themes, through to cutting edge contemporary design.
Can you talk about one of your favorite projects that you have developed?
One of the above country homes has been one of my favorite, as it offers a great scope & mix of cutting edge contemporary design, to also working with very ornate & original 18th / 19th century furniture & artworks. So being sympathetic to these in some rooms is a nice challenge.
The project has been going for nearly a year now, with about another year left on it, so it is quite a project. Not to mention great clients to work with, which always helps!
What are your favorite materials to work?
Juxtaposing soft furnishing fabrics such as velvet & silk with harder raw materials such wood, metal, acrylic & stone.
Kelly Wearstler for her stylish Californian vibe
John Varvatos for his rock n roll edgy fashion
What do you love in a room? Atmosphere & good lighting
What do you hate in a room? Unnecessary clutter & mess!
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? Making a bigger mark within the design world, possibly through luxury hotel design & luxury fashion store design.
Love Happens Team is extremely thankful for Peter’s interview and we do wish to see more and more of his work that we admire so much.
