Women Empowerment: Entertainment Lawyer Nina Shaw
Unknown to most outside Hollywood, talent attorney Nina Shaw is a secret weapon and a “badass” (as her client, actress, Lupita Nyong’o calls her) when it comes to negotiating equitable deals and advocating for her female and minority clients who are trying to break in and then endure in the white- and male-dominated entertainment business. As an African-American woman Nina has most certainly experienced her fair share of discrimination which fuels her desire to promote inclusion and diversity, in Hollywood in particular, and women empowerment across all industries!

Blazing a trail for women of the future, Nina constantly likes to remind women what happens when you demand to be valued. She credits her rise to power and success to her clients, although her internal drive and passion surely played a part!, saying that she was able to stand up for them because they stood up for her. As a founding partner at the firm Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein & Lezcano, where about half the lawyers are women, Nina’s client list includes Oscar-Winner Jamie Foxx, Laurence Fishbourne, Nick Cannon, actress Lupita Nyong’o, ballerina Misty Copeland, and “Selma” director Ava Duvernay.

Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Nina received a BA from Barnard College in 1976 and then went on to attend law school at Columbia. While in law school Nina knew she favored transactional law to litigation and she always had an interest in entertainment, so after graduating in 1979 a career in talent law was a natural choice.

Nina moved from New York to Los Angeles and began her career at the law firm O’Melveny & Myers. Known at the time for its work with the sitcoms “Diff’rent Strokes” and “The Facts of Life,” Nina recalls it was a “tremendous, immersive experience.”
Later she became partner at Dern, Mason, Swerdlow and Floum, and in 1989 started her own firm with Ernest Del – Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein & Lezcano. In an interview with Variety Magazine, Nina says she was essentially forced to start her own firm because those representing the best talent were nearly impossible to get into. She says, “I found them to have virtually no interest in someone like me,” even though she was a graduate from one of the best law schools. “It was disappointing. It wasn’t surprising.”
But Nina is not one to give up, her drive and ambition led her on, and of the decision to start her own firm she says, “The idea of just giving up and going back home — not one moment did that come to mind.”

Referencing the early years of her career, Nina says, “I actually felt things were going to change. I thought there would be lots of women in law firms and lots of women in agencies. And I’ve come to realize that that’s not the case, and if it’s going to happen, I’m going to have to be a big part of the change.”
“I want to have been part of the work in this industry that makes society better, I want to have left some kind of legacy here,” she says. And she most certainly is well on her way!

So how can we do our part?

According to Nina,
Women Empowerment Quote by Nina Shaw, Entertainment Lawyer - If you want to be a woman in power, then empower other women

And

Women Empowerment Quote by Nina Shaw, Entertainment Lawyer - You are a much more forceful advocate against gender bias and wage inequality if you actually hire women. If you are a white man who advocates for change, then hire someone other than a white man as an example of that change

Thank you, Nina Shaw, for all you do for women empowerment and racial equality!
With love, KOKET
