The Luxury Design & Craftsmanship Summit
Organized with the mission of elevating design and craftsmanship, the summit was all about getting to know the importance of both themes and discussing how one can affect the other. Connected to these are of course the marketing strategies used by the best luxury brands. And the importance of defining those strategies.
The summit started with a live showcase: many artisans showed what they do best, creating real masterpieces with their hands.
The first discussion was “A Dialogue Between Design and Artisanal Excellence.” Nicole Segundo, current Network Developer for Portugal at Michelangelo Foundation, moderated the event. The panel consisted of Christian Haas (German Designer at Christian Haas Studio), Emmanuel Babled (French designer at Babled Studio) and Miguel Duarte (Fundação Ricardo Espíritio Santo Silva). The dynamic group discussed the importance of giving designers and artisans equal value.
The second Panel “Present and Future of Craftsmanship” was moderated by Marina de Almeida (Journalist). In this discussion the audience got to learn about the brand Pull Cast – represented by Joao Barros and Rui Pinto; about Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santo, represented by Conceição Amaral; and the Project Culture – represented by Joaquim Barros. Besides their presentations, these people had a lively debate about what is at stake when it comes to craftsmanship.
The second day started with an intervention from brand specialist Carlos Coelho who spoke about brands, their creation and the maintenance associated. He explained that the brands must mark territory everywhere they go and most importantly: they must seduce their clients every day with the propose of making them like and desire their brand. Then, Miguel Costal (general manager of Bentley and Lamborghini), Rita Sambado (Founder of EUS School), Ricardo Conceiçao (general director of L’Atelier des Créatures) and Ana Maria Vasconcelhos (Belcinto) joined him. They each made a small presentation about their brands and then talked about their company’s perspective and the challenges that the brands and artisans face every day with the modernization of the society.
Last but not the least, “Designing and Crafting” was discussed by a talented group of speakers: Nini Andrade Silva, a top Portuguese designer specializing in hospitality projects; Raquel Costa, Strategy Developer at Swarovski; Khaoula Ouerfelli, International Manager at Assouline; Emmanuel Babled, Portuguese furniture brand owner and designer; and Duarte Eira, Chef at Salpoente Restaurant. Each one of them presented their brands and their perspectives regarding the development of design in the modern age.
An event filled with two days of pure knowledge, we will not be missing next year’s Luxury Design & Craftsmanship Summit!
