The Lh Design Questionnaire with Any Avakian & Talia Rosen of Avakian Interiors
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Any: It’s enjoying my everyday routine, working on projects that I’m passionate about while having time for my family!
Talia: A perfect work-life balance and doing work that I’m proud of!
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Any: Building my family and starting the interior design firm. Nevertheless, I am constantly searching for what’s next and pushing myself to achieve more. I learned that all great things come from taking risks.
Talia: Moving to New York by myself when I 18. I look back and can’t believe I had the guts to make a big move like that. As someone from a small beach town in California, New York was the polar opposite of everything that I had known. Making that move was one of my best decisions and has shaped me into the person I am today.
What profession does your alter ego have?
Any: A luxury travel advisor, travelling the world for a living and dining at the most exclusive restaurants.
Talia: Even my alter ego is someone working in the design industry. They definitely are someone who works as a writer in the fashion industry. It was always my dream to work for a top magazine like the main character in an early 2000s rom-com.
The project you will never forget.
Any: Cleveland Rd. The first project with my own interior design company.
Talia: The Peninsula project was one of my favorite projects, as it felt like a culmination of everything Any and I have worked to accomplish.
Your favourite business tool or resource.
Pinterest is always our go-to resource when beginning a project. It’s so much fun to browse through beautifully designed rooms and think about what we can riff off of. Having solid design inspiration is a great way for us to push ourselves out of our comfort zone.
The most timeless design.
Anything that is true to who you are. We always try to incorporate our client’s personalities and design preferences into their homes when we work together. It’s the best way to ensure you won’t get tired of a room—it needs to be a true reflection of who you are and what you love.
The biggest design faux pas.
Lighting is one of the most important interior design elements—no room is ever complete without it. Oftentimes people forget to consider this when designing. To me, lighting is an element that helps a room look bespoke and put together.
Your design motto.
Less is more. I once read that Coco Chanel advised, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” We apply the same design idea to our work. It’s best to be understated and classic than overdone.
Our publisher KOKET makes statement décor, if you were to design a room around one KOKET piece, which would it be, and why?
The Audrey Chair and Foot Rest is a classic and timeless design. When designing we try to stay away from ultra-trendy furniture. Having a solid foundation is the best way to ensure a room doesn’t go out of style. The Audrey Chair and Foot Rest make for the perfect reading area off of the formal living room.
