The Design Questionnaire With Shoshanna Shapiro of Sho and Co

In this edition of Love Happens’ Proust-style Design Questionnaire, join us for a peek inside the creative and inspiring mind of Shoshanna Shapiro, founder of the Maryland-based Sho and Co. Founded on the belief that the best interiors balance beauty and function, Shoshanna and her team are all about creating beautiful homes that enhance the lives of their owners in meaningful and lasting ways. And bringing relaxed, luxury design to east coast living.
A lifelong artist Shoshanna’s creative background informs every detail of her designs. At the core of her work is the emotive nature of colors and textures and the emotional attachments people form to their environments at the core. After renovating her own 120-year-old home, Shoshanna discovered her love for design. So she set out to master the trade, then founded Sho and Co in 2019. Today, as a mother of two grown children, a dog mom, and a cancer survivor, Shoshanna is renowned for her ability to help her clients create the homes of their dreams.
Meet Shoshanna Shapiro of Sho and Co in the Lh Design Questionnaire

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Health and family is all I need to be happy.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Every challenge I have had in life has helped me to grow but at the end of the day, investing in my family is at the top for me.
What profession does your alter ego have?
A humanitarian building homes and educating people in need.
The project you will never forget.
The Chestertown project was one of my first projects when I started Sho and Co. Although I came into this with a great deal of experience in the industry, having just gotten through some significant losses and health issues, my energy and confidence had been depleted. This was the first client that did not come from a referral and had no connection to my past so I wanted to prove to myself that I could make a fresh start from a new place of energy and inspiration. This project helped me to turn the page and start a new and inspiring chapter in my life.

Your favorite business tool or resource.
Technology of all kinds but in particular Sketch-up and Photoshop. People are visual and the more tools you have to set expectations and develop trust will ensure success in the project and happy clients that adore their new space. Having the ability to pull your projects into 3D is so beneficial and provides me with a more solid understanding of how the space will function.
The most timeless design.
This is different for everyone. For me, it’s any element that comes from the earth and has the touch of human hands involved in the creation of the object or architecture. If the design connects with the client’s spirit, it will remain timeless in their eyes as well, so the client’s emotional connection is what is timeless in any style design.

The biggest design faux pas.
Improper lighting as well as inappropriate scale.
Your design motto.
Listen carefully to your client and fully understand what inspires their feeling of comfort and joy.
Our publisher KOKET makes statement décor, if you were to design a room around one KOKET piece, which would it be, and why?
The Rita Cocktail Table. It has clean elegant lines and the noir marble speaks to my love of natural elements.
Love happens when…
you just let go.
