What is your idea of perfect happiness?
When I think of perfect happiness, I imagine myself holding my kids in my arms while we’re down by the ocean. I imagine feeling a sense of purpose and simply spending time appreciating everything I have and all the loved ones I’m surrounded by. That feeling is what I strive for every day.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement is choosing the path of MOST resistance and fighting for my happiness even when it meant taking the unpopular route. I’ve had to make daring life moves that didn’t always appear to be logical in the moment. But doing those things, listening to my own intuition, and pushing past others’ opinions is what ultimately got me to where I am today. I’m proud I was able to listen to my own inner voice.
What profession does your alter ego have?
She’s a NeoNatal nurse who spends her time in the hospital rocking preemies.
The project you will never forget.
While I was filming HGTV’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, I worked to design a home for the Barobi Family. The Barobis were refugees from The Congo who recently moved to Utah for a fresh start. They left behind a tragic past. The family had watched their parents be murdered before their eyes! Helping this family celebrate life after their heroic story of overcoming so much was an absolute delight. We were able to create a space with all the tropical elements they loved. I was especially moved when we designed an accent wall with Congolese masks that represented their family members. Designing that house truly represented all it means to help others build a space that will be peace, safety, and home.
Your favorite business tool or resource.
I am an ambassador for the Sustainable Furnishings Council, and one of my favorite tools is the SFC search bar! You can easily find eco-friendly furnishings, something I value when I’m designing both for clients and myself.
The most timeless design.
The most timeless designs are always inspired by history. They’re styles that pull from Mayan ruins, ancient castles, Mongolian yurts, and the like. It’s why I love stone so much. It reminds me of the streets in Italy that have been there forever, it seems. When we look back and appreciate these elements, we find classic identifiers of what “home” was in the beginning.
The biggest design faux pas.
Following trends! I know it’s fun to see what everyone projects will be the next big thing, but trends are just that. They’re fleeting. I recommend going with something you love with a classic appeal instead.
Your design motto.
Modern Approachable Luxury! I crave the calmness of mind you find in modern spaces, the approachability that lends a certain familiar comfort, and of course, it all has to have a layer of glitz and glam. That’s what I call my modern approachability luxury design style!
