What is your idea of perfect happiness?

I try not to take the word “perfect” too seriously, but I would have to say living your life every day surrounded by people who love and support you, doing work that you enjoy while taking pleasure in the small things in life.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

It may be cliché, but that would be my son. It’s not easy raising another human, and we parents should all take a moment to recognize the enormous work we do day after day. Professionally, I’m proud to be able to do work that I love and to have built a business that keeps growing steadily.

What profession does your alter ego have?

A herbalist! I’d be using plants to heal people.

The project you will never forget.

We were lucky enough to work on furnishing an Edwardian home in the Dolores Park neighborhood of San Francisco. Our client was adventurous and wanted to embrace pattern, color, and a sense of whimsy, which was a joy for us. Throughout the home, we used a combination of blues, greens, ochres, and small touches of magenta or pink, but in various amounts in each room. The client owned some lovely pieces of art that were exciting for us to work with. It can be challenging to furnish small rooms to make them practical for daily use, so we had to do a fair amount of custom pieces. That took a lot of effort and overseeing on our part but we love the results.

Your favorite business tool or resource.

Having a great group of local designer friends has been invaluable for me.

The most timeless design.

Using natural materials like marble, linen, wool, and wood with classic lines.

The biggest design faux pas.

Being careless with scale, either using a rug too small for the furniture arrangement or using furniture pieces that are too large for the room.

Your design motto.

Create a home you love spending time in.

Our publisher, KOKET, makes statement décor. If you were to design a room around one of their pieces, which would it be, and why?

I would choose the Paris Oval dining table and would love to create a dining room around it. I would pair it with delicate and upholstered dining chairs, creating contrast with the travertine and walnut of the table.

Love Happens when…

…we photograph a project. The rooms all come together the way we had imagined; the home is full of flowers and beautiful details throughout, and if we step back a minute to fully take it all in during the chaotic day, it’s magical!
