The power of another person’s story is a unique power. It is one that, in its most powerful form, flows from one person’s experience to another in an almost physical rush. Perhaps a feeling of, if they did it, so can I. Or, a moment of clarity where, all of a sudden, a new idea appears, sprouting from the interaction.

For women, the voice of another woman’s story of perseverance, innovation, motivation, success, and so on can be oh-so-powerful. So, in our series, “The Women of…”, we share the women behind the brand. The women who bring a brand to life. Women who are living, working, and raising families. Through a series of questions, we delve into the minds of these women to share their empowering and uplifting thoughts and stories. Up now, The Woman of Lo Chen Design.

Tell us a bit about your path and what led to your decision to start Lo Chen Design.

I am an interior designer and artist with a passion that has been nurtured since my early years growing up in the cosmopolitan city of Hong Kong.

I embarked on my formal journey in the world of art and design by studying Fine Arts in HK, where my love for creative expression and aesthetics deepened. My quest for knowledge and experience led me to the bustling streets of New York City, where I took a summer course during my studies in Hong Kong.

I yearned for the opportunity to oversee every facet of a project, from inception to completion.

In the Big Apple, I fell in love, not just with the city itself but with its art, design, and the rich tapestry of diversity that inspires so many. I further honed my skills by pursuing a degree in interior design in New York. Subsequently, I gained invaluable experience working for various top design firms for about five years.

However, my dream was always to start my own design company. I yearned for the opportunity to oversee every facet of a project, from inception to completion. I believed that I could gain a holistic understanding of the creative process by handling a project from start to finish.

Do you recall any critical turning point when you realized your business was succeeding?

One significant milestone was my inaugural project when I ventured into entrepreneurship. It involved designing a residence and home office for an independent film director. It is a very unique and creative project I truly enjoyed.

What do you consider your greatest achievement to date?

Realizing my dream of establishing my own company and having the opportunity to work on several dream projects stands out as my greatest achievement to date.

I’m grateful for the unwavering support from my family, enabling me to pursue my entrepreneurial dream.

Who or what has contributed most to your success?

My family. I’m grateful for the unwavering support from my family, enabling me to pursue my entrepreneurial dream.

How do you handle negative feedback or criticism of your work?

I approach negative feedback or criticism with humility, seeing it as part of the learning process and an opportunity for improvement. While I remain confident in discerning which comments to consider, I digest the feedback, strive to enhance my work, and maintain a positive outlook.

My current portfolio primarily focuses on projects in prominent locations such as Manhattan, the Hamptons, and Miami in the United States. These projects span across various sectors, including residential, commercial, and hospitality design.

I’m excited to share that I’ve embarked on a new venture by collaborating with an architect friend in Hong Kong. Our goal is to expand the scope of our design work into the Asian market.
