Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

April 20 – October 27, 2024
Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist\u2019s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation, a video, and a series of commissioned sculptures, Erlanger continues her decade-long investigation into what it means to call a planet home.  Informed by her interest in \u201cclosed worlds\u201d\u2014human-made, climate-controlled environments\u2014the artist has produced all newly commissioned work. Erlanger is converting the gallery into a sculptural landscape comprising distinct yet interrelated zones: a set showcasing her short film <\/em>Appliance (2024); dioramas of off-world landscapes and impossible architectures; illuminated planet sculptures; and a constellation of arrows piercing the Museum\u2019s brutalist staircase.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jenny Holzer, \u201cLight Line\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Guggenheim Museum, New York<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This exhibition presents a reimagination of Jenny Holzer\u2019s landmark 1989 installation<\/a> at the Guggenheim. Climbing all six ramps of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed rotunda to the building\u2019s apex, the site-specific installation transforms the building with a display of scrolling texts, featuring selections from her iconic series, such as \u201cTruisms\u201d and \u201cInflammatory Essays\u201d.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

“<\/em>When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting comprises an exhibition, publication and discursive programming that explores Black self-representation and celebrates global Black subjectivities and Black consciousness from pan-African and pan-diasporic perspectives. It boldly brings together artworks from the last 100 years, by Black artists working globally, into dialogue with leading Black thinkers, writers and poets who are active today.<\/em>” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mickalene Thomas, \u201cAll About Love\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Broad, Los Angeles (also The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia & Hayward Gallery, London)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Debuting at The Broad with over 90 works made by the artist over the last 20 years, <\/em>Mickalene Thomas: All About Love is the first major international tour of this pioneering artist\u2019s work. The exhibition highlights how Mickalene Thomas has mastered and innovated within several disciplines, from mixed-media painting and collage to installation and photography. The exhibition shares its title and several of its themes with the pivotal text by feminist author bell hooks, in which love is an active process rooted in healing, carving a path away from domination and towards collective liberation.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

“This exhibit presents a sweeping art history of hip-hop culture and its myriad expressions across the globe. Celebrate hip-hop\u2019s 50th anniversary with the genre\u2019s extraordinary influence on contemporary society over the past two decades. This multidisciplinary and multimedia exhibition examines the resounding impact of hip-hop on contemporary art and culture.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crafting Modernity: Design in Latin America, 1940-1980<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Museum of Modern Art, New York<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This exhibition presents these sometimes conflicting visions of modernity proposed by designers of home environments in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela between 1940 and 1980. For some, design was an evolution of local and Indigenous craft traditions, leading to an approach that combined centuries-old artisanal techniques with machine-based methods. For others, design responded to market conditions and local tastes, and was based on available technologies and industrial processes. In this exhibition, objects including furniture, appliances, posters, textiles, and ceramics, as well as a selection of photographs and paintings, will explore these tensions.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
