{"id":104739,"date":"2025-05-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lovehappensmag.com\/blog\/?p=104739"},"modified":"2025-05-01T15:31:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T15:31:49","slug":"female-chefs-at-the-top-of-the-michelin-star-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lovehappensmag.com\/blog\/2025\/05\/02\/female-chefs-at-the-top-of-the-michelin-star-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"The Women at the Top of the Michelin Star Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the Michelin restaurant guide dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, getting a star is arguably, to this day, the most respected and sought-after recognition that a restaurant can achieve. <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Reaching three stars, however, is reserved for the absolute highest level of cuisine, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/guide.michelin.com\/us\/en\/restaurants\/3-stars-michelin?sort=lowestPrice\" target=\"_blank\">only 145 restaurants<\/a>\u00a0around the world hold that distinction.<\/span> An even smaller club is the one made up of female head chefs on that list of restaurants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can count the current members with your hands: Ana Ro\u0161 (Hi\u0161a Franko, Slovenia), Clare Smyth (Core, London), Dominique Crenn (Atelier Crenn, San Francisco), Anne-Sophie Pic (PIC, France), Elena Arzak (Arzak, Spain), and Nadia Santini (Dal Pescatore, Italy). Each of them has followed a very different path to the top of the culinary world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whereas Clare Smyth had a more conventional career, first training for years under great names, such as Alain Ducasse and Gordon Ramsay, Ana Ro\u0161 had no formal training and learned on the job, as she and her husband took the reins of his family restaurant. Some of them, as evidenced by their last name, carried on the family legacy by earning that last star or maintaining the restaurant\u2019s place at the top. And then there\u2019s French-born Dominique Crenn, who immigrated to America to become the first female chef in the United States to get three Michelin stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others have come before them, but very few and far between\u2014just over half a dozen came before the women on this list. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eug%C3%A9nie_Brazier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eug\u00e9nie Brazier<\/a> was the first female chef to receive three stars, and also the first chef in general to hold a total of six Michelin stars across her two restaurants in and around Lyon, France. She belonged to a different generation of female chefs\u2014affectionately known as \u201cm\u00e8res lyonnaises\u201d (Mothers of Lyon)\u2014who put Lyon on the map as the gastronomic capital of France, with simpler, homestyle dishes executed to perfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is a list of 3-Star Michelin restaurants currently helmed by female chefs. Her strong, determined, extrovert and contagiously friendly character is perfectly mirrored on a long tasting menu,\u201d the Michelin guide <a href=\"https:\/\/guide.michelin.com\/us\/en\/gorizia\/kobarid\/restaurant\/hisa-franko\">wrote<\/a> of Franko, highlighting her \u201cinimitable style.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A self-taught chef and six-language speaker, Ro\u0161 at one time pursued a career in diplomacy, even getting a degree in international studies. Instead, she decided to join forces with her husband, Valter Kramer (the restaurant\u2019s sommelier), and the pair took over his family\u2019s restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cWhen I told my parents that I fell in love with someone who has a restaurant, my mother almost had a heart attack,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yoQq48RMlRQ&amp;t=108s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said in a video interview<\/a> for the Michelin Guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Ro\u0161, the Hi\u0161a Franko family now extends to over 100 members, she described in another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9fqJVieRbJc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a> interview.&nbsp;It includes local farmers, shepherds and cheese makers, people foraging for ingredients in the surrounding Kobarid area, and fishermen on the other side of the mountain. Her prompt rise to the top of the guide followed a long career working with some of the biggest names in gastronomy, including training at Alain Ducasse\u2019s Le Louis XV in Monaco and working under Gordon Ramsay for 13 years to eventually become the chef patron at his eponymously-named and similarly three-Michelin-starred restaurant.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born in Northern Ireland, Smyth moved to England at 16 to study culinary arts at Highbury College. In 2013, she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the hospitality industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smyth\u2019s penchant for business has played a key role in her success. Even as a 25-year-old sous chef for Ramsey, she would make it a point to go through the group\u2019s profits and losses, the chef <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/408098f1-3f48-4103-b4f5-8b8150bc7cab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told the Financial Times<\/a>. And when it came time to open her first solo place, she didn\u2019t rely on a big budget from outside investment, but instead, as she told FT, \u201ca bit of borrowed money from the bank, and some of my own finances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI remember Alain Ducasse \u2013 a great mentor of mine \u2013 coming in and asking for a sauce spoon, and we didn\u2019t have them. Not because I didn\u2019t know, but because we couldn\u2019t afford them,\u201d she remembered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theworlds50best.com\/stories\/News\/clare-smyth-core-turning-two-identity-as-chef-keeping-calm-in-the-kitchen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an interview <\/a>for The World\u2019s 50 Best Restaurants\u2019 website. \u201cBut people didn\u2019t care that we didn\u2019t open up with a \u00a310 million budget, and that\u2019s a really lovely thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smyth devotes part of her time to helping raise the next generation of chefs, for example, serving as president of the cooking competition Bocuse d&#8217;Or and as a judge of the S. Then she returned home to San Sebasti\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had to find my identity at Arzak, otherwise I wouldn&#8217;t be useful. I worked in each station of the kitchen to relearn what happens in my house. Also, I studied many books of Basque cooking to learn more about my roots,\u201d she told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2012\/aug\/19\/elena-arzak-basque-chef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the late 2000s, Elena became joint head chef along with her father, Juan Mari Arzak. She has since progressively been taking the reins \u2014 and has done so \u201cin magnificent fashion,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/guide.michelin.com\/us\/en\/pais-vasco\/es-donostia-san-sebastian\/restaurant\/arzak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michelin guide noted<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Father and daughter have often spoken in interviews of their harmonious relationship in the kitchen and how their individual strengths have helped keep Arzak at the top over the years. Both of her parents came from farming families, and her dad was a painter. The love of art they shared bled into her restaurant, Atelier Crenn, which Dominique has dubbed a \u201cworkshop for art.\u201d The menu reads like a poe,m and some of Crenn\u2019s father\u2019s paintings decorate the walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crenn moved to the United States at the age of 21, without formal cooking training, with hopes of pursuing a career in gastronomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrench women did not head restaurants back then, and we certainly weren\u2019t invited to dream of doing so. It goes without saying that it made me incredibly sad to have to leave my home, but I refuse to be exposed to those kinds of limitations,\u201d she told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theceomagazine.com\/business\/recommended\/dominique-crenn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CEO Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>She got her start in the culinary world at the then-renowned San Francisco restaurant Stars. She then went on to work at the Intercontinental Hotel in Jakarta, where she became the first female executive chef in Indonesia. That includes Dame de Pic in London (two stars), the Anne-Sophie PIC restaurant at the Beau-Rivage Palace (which also earned two stars), and Dame de Pic Dubai (one star).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the multiple locations, Pic has collected about ten stars, which puts her in the top ten of the most Michelin-decorated chefs in the world. She did so with no formal culinary training, having earlier in her career turned away from the family trade. It was not until the passing of her father, in her early twenties, that she reconsidered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, she opened Andr\u00e9, a more casual eatery in the same building as the original Pic in Valence.
