When it comes to creating a design that feels like home yet showcases the unexpected, interior designer Michael Mitchell knows how to get the job done right. After perfecting his talents in New York City, he returned to Charleston, SC, where Michael Mitchell Inc. made its debut. Since 2010, his design firm has provided an immersive experience for clients, making sure that their vision leaves a significant impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael\u2019s style has become truly his own\u2014known as his signature \u201ctwisted traditional\u201d style, he utilizes his skills to blend classic aesthetics with more avant-garde elements. This evolution has quickly turned him into a timeless visionary\u2014one that has been recognized in many publications that we all know and love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your idea of perfect happiness?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Perfect happiness for me is hearing the words “no budget” on a project! It\u2019s like being given a free pass to explore all the creative possibilities and bring in some truly exceptional pieces. It\u2019s the flexibility to find those unique, one-of-a-kind elements that elevate a space and really make it feel special. The freedom to design without restrictions\u2014what\u2019s not to love?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you consider your greatest achievement?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Throughout my life, I\u2019ve had the privilege of bringing joy to people and their homes by helping them create beautiful, meaningful spaces. The ability to touch lives through design is, without a doubt, my most rewarding achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What profession does your alter ego have?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

If I ever pursued something different, I would love to be an innkeeper. My dream would be a large-scale bed and breakfast with eighty rooms or more, perhaps in a beautiful location in Europe. The idea of combining hospitality, design, and creating memorable experiences sounds like the perfect adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design you will never forget.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

My last room at the Symphony Showhouse was designed just the way I love to create spaces\u2014layered, thoughtful, and full of personality. I approached it as if I were living there, crafting a collected look that blended a mix of genres and styles. From antique artwork to my mother\u2019s portrait, every detail made the space feel like a reflection of me and my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your favorite business tool or resource.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

My phone! I am a talker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most timeless design.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m drawn to anything rooted in classicism. A sense of timelessness is the secret to creating beauty, and that comes from thoughtful layering and the charm of antiques. Mixing old and new, from near and far, creates a look that feels effortlessly timeless. Well-traveled interiors always have a way of standing the test of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest design faux pas.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Accent walls. It feels like you didn’t bother to finish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your design motto.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

First and foremost, ask the client one million and five questions. We cannot give you a home to live in if we don’t know how you live! I want to know it all in order to create a space custom-tailored to your needs and wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our publisher <\/strong>KOKET<\/strong><\/a> makes statement d\u00e9cor. If you were to design a room around one KOKET piece, which would it be, and why?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019d choose the “Hera Chandelier”\u2014it\u2019s an absolute showstopper! I imagine it in a commercial space running along a sleek bar. It creates such an elegant, dynamic atmosphere. Its dramatic curves and luxurious finish add a touch of opulence while maintaining a modern vibe. I\u2019d love to design a space where the Hera Chandelier sets the tone, with clean lines and minimalist furniture to let its beauty shine without competing for attention.<\/p>\n\n\n

Love happens when\u2026.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a sparkle of joy. We could be talking about a relationship or a painting over your sofa; if it makes you happy and brings you joy, then that’s love! Anything around you should be lifting you up, not pulling you down\u2014people, places, or things. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
