August is here, and we are celebrating with the one and only Iris Apfel<\/a>. Born August 29, 1921, Iris Apfel was a flamboyant, delightfully vocal, and stylish American businesswoman, interior designer, and fashion designer. From her Jewish family roots in Astoria, Queens, New York City, her father owned a glass and mirror business, and her Russian-born mom, Sadye Barrel, owned a fashion boutique. Style was in her blood! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a young woman, she fell in love with Manhattan, and after studying art history at New York University, she was a copywriter at Women’s Wear Daily. She also worked for interior designer Elinor Johnson and illustrator Robert Goodman. All the while developing her own personal brand. A brand renowned by its large-rimmed, stylish glasses, brilliant colors, and high-quality textiles. In 1948, Iris married Carl Apfel, and they launched the textile firm Old World Weavers<\/a>, running it until they retired in 1992. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reminder to us all to work at being ourselves and doing all the things, at 97 in 2019, Iris signed a modeling contract with a global agency. She passed away at the age of 102 in her home in Palm Beach, FL. One of our favorite Iris Apfel quotes is, “You don’t find out who you are unless you work at it<\/em>.”\u00a0May your August be filled with love and authenticity!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
