In a world racing toward the cloud, D\u2019ORO slows the heartbeat\u2014returning the book to its highest calling: a living, heirloom vessel for culture. Founded in Rome in 2000 by Salvatore Giorgio Dino, D\u2019ORO is the rare atelier that conceives, writes, prints, illuminates, binds, and finishes every page entirely by hand, under one roof. The result? Treasure-box volumes built to be read today and revered centuries from now. I had the great pleasure of speaking with the man behind the brand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Love Affair That Became a Mission<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen did your love affair with books begin?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s my true love,\u201d Salvatore Giorgio Dino tells us without hesitation. “Books preserve information\u2014that is their job. But to preserve culture for future generations, they must be made in a certain way. The industry chased speed and cheapness; I chose longevity.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dino’s love began early. His father worked for Rizzoli, one of Italy\u2019s great publishing houses, and each summer he brought his young son into the world of books. From the age of eight, Dino spent his school holidays learning every facet of the trade\u2014paper production, printing, engraving, bookbinding\u2014absorbing the smell of ink and the rhythm of craft. When his father passed away, those lessons took on new meaning. \u201cHe gave me a strict education,\u201d Dino recalls, \u201cbut also the foundation for everything I do today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years later, as the world began to digitize, that inherited love transformed into a mission. Watching information migrate from paper to screens, Dino grew deeply concerned about impermanence. \u201cClouds won\u2019t last a hundred years. A book\u2014if crafted correctly\u2014will.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rome as Workshop, Time as Material<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Along the ancient Appian Way in Rome<\/strong>, D\u2019ORO\u2019s atelier hums with quiet mastery. Inside, more than fifty artisans craft every element of a book\u2014paper, ink, and binding\u2014by hand, following centuries-old techniques refined for today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each material is chosen for beauty and endurance:<\/strong> handmade paper tested to last centuries, inks mixed from natural pigments like lapis lazuli, bindings of cotton, silk, leather, or bronze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among D\u2019ORO\u2019s creations are its famed Golden Sculptured Books<\/strong>\u2014extraordinary editions with hand-sculpted golden covers made using Ancient Roman techniques. Each cover is made of copper, handhammered 2,000 times, on a mold made in bronze created by a famous artist, and covered with 24-carat gold. Its ART Collection with original works of art as covers. And exquisite coffee table books offering the same level of craftsmanship in a more accessible format. Whether leather-bound, painted, or gilded, every D\u2019ORO book is made to preserve the same treasure: the story within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are the only publishing house that publishes and prints entirely in-house,\u201d Dino informs us. \u201cNo suppliers. No secrets. No shortcuts.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tradition Over Technology\u2014Deliberately<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe never had a computer, and we never will,” explains Dino. “No AI. When we need a photograph, we send a photographer. We own the rights. When a project is complete, we destroy the originals. The book is the only way to access the story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not nostalgia; it\u2019s security\u2014cultural and personal.<\/strong> \u201cClients ask where their information goes in the age of AI. With us, it stays on paper. Private. Permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating Treasures for the Future<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Crucially, D\u2019ORO does not reproduce the past. \u201cMuseums already preserve old Bibles,\u201d Dino explains. \u201cWe get inspired by them to make new ones\u2014brand-new stories worthy of the museum of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That philosophy transformed D\u2019ORO\u2019s books into what he calls \u201ctreasure boxes,\u201d<\/strong> where the true treasure is the narrative inside. Early in the company\u2019s journey, this devotion caught the Vatican’s eye, which became one of D\u2019ORO\u2019s very first clients under Pope John Paul II. \u201cThey understood immediately the value of preserving culture beyond technology,\u201d Dino tells us. \u201cTheir faith in our mission gave us courage to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the atelier works on commissions for heads of state, royal families, and storied maisons, preserving legacies in objects meant to be touched, read, and passed down. \u201cThe quality is so high you can use it. The information will stand.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Atelier Model, Optimized<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

How does one workshop craft such complexity at pace? By rethinking mastery. \u201cIn the past, one artisan did everything,\u201d Dino explains. \u201cThese masters have disappeared. So we mapped each process into about 50 simple steps. I can teach you to lay the white under-color in a day; in two years, you\u2019ll be as skilled as the former single master\u2014often better. That\u2019s how we move quickly without industrialization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result: a human production line reminiscent of Renaissance workshops\u2014colorists, engravers, illuminators, printers\u2014each refining a single gesture to excellence. D\u2019ORO delivers bespoke, from zero to finished volume, typically in six to eight months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Noble Lion, and a Promise<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

D\u2019ORO\u2019s emblem\u2014a young, forward-leaning lion\u2014signals courage in the face of rapid change. \u201cWe\u2019re not scared of the future,\u201d Dino says. \u201cWe preserve it\u2014and challenge it.\u201d His vow is simple: never cheat quality. <\/strong>\u201cIf a client expects 100, we deliver 120. I want to look the collector in the eyes after 25, 50 years\u2014and know we kept our promise.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project Spotlight: <\/strong>The Golden Waves<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Among D\u2019ORO\u2019s most ambitious books is The Golden Waves<\/strong><\/em>, a seven-year odyssey presented for the house\u2019s 25th anniversary. One hundred photographers were contracted\u2014no Photoshop allowed\u2014to capture the world\u2019s waves in their raw, perilous beauty. Seventy withdrew; thirty finished. The images\u2014printed in pure form, then illuminated and bound by hand\u2014are accompanied by texts from leading oceanographers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This extraordinary edition, limited to 99 copies, embodies D\u2019ORO\u2019s philosophy: authenticity, endurance, and the poetry of human endeavor.<\/strong> When production closes, all original images are destroyed. What remains is the book\u2014singular, sovereign, final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultural Luxury, Defined<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dino shares with us that if he had to distill D\u2019ORO into a few words, he would choose craftsmanship and lusso culturale<\/em>\u2014cultural luxury. \u201cSelling culture is the hardest thing,\u201d he says. \u201cBut what is more important than a story written for your heirs? One book\u2014just one\u2014might be the object your great-grandchild saves first. That is beyond money.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Books, Why Now<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dino predicted that “90\u201399% of life would go digital,\u201d but he built D\u2019ORO for the 1% who still want physical things. \u201cIt\u2019s not about price,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s about meaning. Maybe one book in a library\u2014but it\u2019s the<\/em> book. In an AI era, privacy and permanence matter more.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Business of Being the Best<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In a world obsessed with speed, D\u2019ORO\u2019s pace feels radical. To Dino, savoir-faire<\/em> isn\u2019t a business model\u2014it\u2019s a moral one. \u201cEither be the cheapest or be the best,\u201d he says. \u201cWe choose the path of excellence\u2014not for status, but for soul.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The house releases about one jewel project a year publicly (many others remain private bespoke commissions), and its editions often appreciate in value. \u201cOur collectors give us freedom. In return, we give them books that outlive us all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA favorite project?\u201d we ask. Dino smiles: \u201cAlways the next one.\u201d He hints that 2026 will bring multiple world-famous artists together in an unprecedented publishing collaboration. As ever, D\u2019ORO is planning in decades, not quarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
