As babies grow, their metabolisms also adapt, becoming more efficient, which also reduces the amount of time caffeine stays in their bodies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-safe-consumption-guidelines-for-breastfeeding-mothers\"><strong>Safe Consumption Guidelines for Breastfeeding Mothers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take it from the experts, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the CDC have agreed that a moderate consumption of caffeine is safe for many breastfeeding mothers. Since every child is born a little bit different, their tolerance to caffeine also varies, so what we do here is we track their patterns of how they react when they somehow have caffeine through the breast milk, then make the necessary adjustments after. Watch out and take notes of these signs to help you figure them out,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased irritability&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restlessness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unusual crying spells<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty in getting to sleep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nap times are fragmented or happen in shorter spans of time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signs of gastrointestinal discomfort<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you&#8217;re trying to start tracking, having a simple log of the times when you have caffeine, time when your baby feeds, and how they behave after your feeding sessions when you have caffeine is a great start. Many unrelated factors, like growth spurts or digestive development, can be the cause of them. This is about the amount of time that your body needs to process, absorb, and eliminate half of the caffeine that you&#8217;ve consumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s explain it this way,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Healthy adults need processing time of about 3 &#8211; 7 hours for a half-life.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For newborns it takes them about 80 &#8211; 100 hours, or roughly about 3 &#8211; 4 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But by the time they&#8217;re about 3 &#8211; 5 months old, the half-life significantly becomes shorter.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can see above the half-life for a newborn can mean that they&#8217;re prone to caffeine sensitivity. Even for small amounts, it can easily accumulate in their body much faster than they can eliminate it. This case is especially heightened when the mother consumes caffeine frequently throughout the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-impact-of-high-caffeine-levels-on-milk-supply\"><strong>The Impact of High Caffeine Levels on Milk Supply<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another concern that many mothers often ask when talking about breastfeeding and coffee is whether it&#8217;s going to hurt the production of milk. From research, moderate intake of caffeine doesn&#8217;t really decrease the milk supply. But, get this, in extreme conditions. Many other products can contain caffeine, some of which you might not be expecting. To have a better understanding of how breastfeeding and coffee correlate, and other possible sources, let&#8217;s dive deeper into them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tea &#8211; green, black, matcha, and oolong<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy drinks &#8211; contain high levels of sugar and caffeine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sodas &#8211; cola and some other carbonated drinks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chocolate &#8211; especially dark ones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medications &#8211; some over-the-counter pain relievers or cold medicines contain some<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decaf coffee &#8211; yes, they still contain small but still notable amounts of caffeine.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To stay within safe limits when you&#8217;re breastfeeding, the increased awareness that these drinks can also contain caffeine can help you track your intake more accurately. Most mothers can really get back to enjoying a cup or two, but with really just moderation and proper timing. This is to help preserve their breastfeeding journey and their baby&#8217;s comfort. It&#8217;s all about listening to what your body says and feels about it, observing how your little ones get affected by it, and adjusting these habits as needed. You could be holding the little one on a hip carrier or just feeling the moment with a warm mug in hand, while holding your little ones on the side.
