More couples are skipping traditional venue hire and getting married at home instead. There’s something about saying your vows in a garden you actually know and love that a hotel function room can’t match. But a beautiful garden and a functional wedding venue are two very different things, so let’s discover what it really takes to pull this off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assess Your Space Before You Plan Anything Else<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first thing you’ll want to do is walk your garden with fresh eyes. Forget how it looks on a Sunday afternoon with a cup of tea. Think about it with 60 or 80 guests standing in it. Where will people naturally gather? Where does the ground slope? Which areas turn to mud after rain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measure everything. You’ll need to know the exact dimensions of any flat, usable space, because that will determine how large a structure you can fit and where your ceremony area can go. Check access points too. Delivery vehicles, catering vans and portaloo trucks will all need a way in, and a standard garden gate won’t cut it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get the Ground Wedding-Ready<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Grass looks lovely in photos, but it doesn’t hold up well under foot traffic, table legs and heels. If you’re expecting more than 40 guests, you’ll almost certainly need some form of ground protection. Interlocking plastic tiles or heavy-duty matting laid over the lawn will stop it turning into a churned-up mess by the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the area where your marquee will sit, the ground needs to be as level as possible. Some couples hire a mini digger a few weeks beforehand to flatten out any bumps. If your garden has a significant slope, a professional ground crew can build a temporary sub-floor to create a level base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How a Marquee Becomes Your Main Event Space<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A garden on its own can handle drinks and a ceremony, but it can’t comfortably host a seated dinner for 80 followed by dancing. That’s where\u00a0commercial marquees<\/a> come in. They’ll give you a proper enclosed space for dining, speeches, a bar area and a dance floor, all while keeping everything on your own property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Size matters here. As a rough guide, you’ll need about 1 square metre per seated guest, plus extra for the dance floor, bar and catering stations. A 6m x 12m marquee will comfortably seat around 60 to 70 guests with room for a small dance area. Go bigger if you can, because a cramped marquee will feel stuffy by 9pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about how the marquee connects to the rest of the garden. An open-sided entrance facing your ceremony spot creates a natural flow. Lining the walkway with lanterns or potted plants will tie the two spaces together visually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inside of a marquee is a blank canvas, and that’s both exciting and easy to get wrong. The trick is to bring in enough texture and warmth that it stops feeling temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
