Jewelry books are too often a disappointment. The\u00a0Cartier Panth\u00e8re\u00a0<\/em>book, published by Assouline as Cartier celebrates 100 years of its iconic big cat motif, is the opposite of that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is a truly elegant, surprising, and unique book, completely devoted to this iconic creation,” says Laurent Feniou, Cartier\u2019s MD in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cartier may be able to pinpoint the debut of the panther in its designs to 1914, but it was really Jeanne Toussaint, who joined the maison<\/em> in 1918 as an accessories designer before becoming creative director of jewelry in 1933, who took the panther motif and ran with it. In fact, she got on the feline’s back and rode it hell for leather into the jungle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will sound like hyperbole but this book really is a trove of wonderment \u2013 and more of an art and cultural history book than a catalogue of jewels. There is a fascinating opening chapter on \u2018The Panther in Art\u2019 by art historian B\u00e9r\u00e9nice Geoffroy-Schneiter, looking at depictions of the animal in everything from 30,000-year-old cave paintings to Pink Panther by contemporary artist Jeff Koons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unrivaled jewelry historian and author Vivienne Becker unravels the panther\u2019s role in Cartier\u2019s history, dipping in and out of some of the most fascinating tales of panther-centric commissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jewelry specialist Joanna Hardy looks into the most interesting aspects of the actual creation of panther jewels, while fashion editor Andr\u00e9\u00a0Leon Talley investigates the panther\u2019s role as a cultural icon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
