Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875-1942)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\nSculptor, art patron, collector, prominent society figure, and founder of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney was\u00a0born into the wealthy\u00a0Vanderbilt family\u00a0and married into the\u00a0Whitney family.

Peggy Guggenheim (1898 – 1979)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\nBorn to the wealthy New York City Guggenheim family, Peggy Guggenheim<\/strong><\/em> was the niece of Solomon R. Guggenheim, founder of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, a leading institution for the collection, preservation, and research of\u00a0modern\u00a0and\u00a0contemporary art and operator of museums around the world including New York’s Guggenheim Museum. Peggy has been credited with launching the career of Jackson Pollock and supported many other young artists while amassing and exhibiting a collection of noted art at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection where she lived in Venice.

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (1874-1948)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\nWife of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller Jr., Abby was an art collector, socialite and philanthropist. Her love of art and philanthropic work played a large role in the creation of the Museum of Modern Art in 1929.

\nBirth control activist, sex educator, writer, and nurse, Margaret Sanger popularized the term “birth control” and opened the first birth control clinic in the United States in Brooklyn in 1916. Her support of women’s health issues led to the formation of\u00a0Planned Parenthood.

Dorothy Parker (1893-1967)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\nBest known for her wit and wisecracks, Dorothy Parker was a poet<\/a>, writer, critic and satirist. Early in her career her work was dismissed as frivolous, but later she contributed works to publications like Vogue<\/em>, Vanity Fair<\/em> and The New Yorker<\/em>. When Dorothy died in 1967 she left her literary estate to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr who was killed just months later.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1929-1994)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\nNoted for her style and elegance,\u00a0Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis “Jackie O.” was the wife of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. An advocate of historic preservation, Jackie O. worked to restore DC’s Lafayette Square during her husband’s presidency, has been credited with helping to save Grand Central Terminal and numerous other landmark buildings while raising public awareness about landmarks throughout NYC.

Jane Jacobs (1916-2006)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\nAn American-Canadian journalist, author and activist who championed a community-based approach to city building and went head to head with city planner Robert Moses in opposition to his ideas for developing New York City. Along with others, Jane Jacobs<\/a> successfully prevented Robert Moses from building a highway that would have wrecked Washington Square Park!

Billie Holiday (1915-1959)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\nOne of the most influential singers of her time, Eleanora Fagan, known as Billie Holiday, was a jazz musician and singer-songwriter who had a seminal influence on jazz music and pop singing. She began singing in jazz nightclubs in Harlem around 1930 where she was eventually discovered landing her a record deal in 1935. During her 30+ year career she performed all over New York City until she lost her battle with addiction.

Caroline Schermerhorn Astor (1830-1908)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\nA prominent socialite during the last quarter of the 19th century,\u00a0Caroline Webster “Lina” Schermerhorn created the famous List of 400, which included the top high-society families in New York.\u00a0Famous for being called “the<\/i>\u00a0Mrs. Astor” or simply “Mrs. Astor”, she was the wife of businessman\u00a0William Backhouse Astor Jr.\u00a0and mother of John Jacob Astor IV.
