There is no literal or direct translation for the Danish word Hygge (hoo-ga) but you get a sense of it during moments when you\u2019re snuggled up in your bed while it\u2019s raining outside, or when you\u2019re bundled up in a blanket and you have a hot cup of coffee in your hand. It\u2019s generally a sense of contentment and an overall feeling of wellbeing. So here\u2019s how you can incorporate it in your home:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Choose Monochromatic Colours<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Culture Trip highly recommends that you keep things clean and simple<\/a> just like how the Danes would\u2014remember that less is more. Stick with your basic needs and decorate using multifunctional pieces of furniture. You can also add a few prints and patterns on your throw pillows, curtains, and rugs to give your home more personality. Big and soft cushions are a good investment, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hygge is all about setting the mood and there\u2019s no better way to do that than getting the best kinds of lighting and choosing the right colours<\/g>, too. Candles and lamps are always present in hygge<\/g> homes, but experts warn against using them too much and without care. Professor Peter Moller the lead author of research in Copenhagen University told The Guardian<\/a> that burning candles causes<\/g> a greater deal of damage similar to that of diesel exhaust fumes. What you can do instead is to get yourself some wax LED candles that have that same magical glow of candlelight minus the fire and health hazards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also opt for floor and table lamps\ninstead of overhead lighting as it creates equal areas of darkness and\nlight\u2014perfectly capturing the essence of hygge. Warm coloured bulbs are also a\ngreat choice, especially warm white ones with a low lumen number. If you\nalready have a lot of overhead lighting that you cannot (or do not) want to\nreplace, install a dimmer instead. It\u2019s an inexpensive way to get that warm,\nlow light ambience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Set the Right Temperature<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s nothing more hygge<\/g> than a warm room in winter so make sure you\u2019ve got your home\u2019s thermostat set at the right temperature. It\u2019s also the best time to use your wood-burning stove and fireplace. Just make sure you keep them in tip-top shape all year round so that you\u2019re sure they\u2019re working properly when it\u2019s time to use them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although wood fireplaces are cosy, they\u2019re quite difficult to clean. Old and poorly maintained fireplaces also pose a greater risk of house fires, not to mention an increase in air pollution. Constant exposure to wood-burning smoke can also cause asthma and bronchitis. That\u2019s why most homeowners now prefer electric fires, as they\u2019re easier to install and maintain. Screwfix details how electric fires offer up to 100% heat efficiency<\/a>, unlike wood-burning fireplaces that can only convert 15% of the wood\u2019s energy into useful heat. Electric fires also come in an array of designs that will suit any style of living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turn Your Bathroom Into a Mini Spa<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The great thing about hygge<\/g> is how you can incorporate it in every part of your life. Some owners opt to have it only in their bathrooms and bedrooms, while some like it in their living room and home office. If you choose to turn your bathroom into a hygge<\/g> spa, add a plush rug right outside the shower door or next to the tub. Hang a cosy<\/g> bathrobe at arm\u2019s reach, too. It\u2019s worth incorporating more natural materials in your bathroom, as well. House & Garden recommends stripped-back wooden floorboards and shutters<\/a> with a few antique and hand-carved decorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
