Recently Love Happens had the great pleasure of being a guest at Joie de Vivre\u2019s first New York hotel, Hotel 50 Bowery. Inspired by its Chinatown\u2019s location, the hotel is enriched with rich layers of history and Asian heritage. The 21-story building in the historic landmark location, 50 Bowery, features 229-rooms, a luxury rooftop bar, and its own permanent exhibit from the Museum of Chinese America.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joie de Vivre Hotels, a Two Roads Hospitality brand, strive to mirror authentically local and electric experiences. They design to reflect location and engage the five senses. Vivre succeeded in bringing Chinatown\u2019s unique history to life in every room. Chu Enterprises developed this boutique hotel. Which helped inspire the historical Asian aspects of the property. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vibe at Hotel 50 Bowery<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Created to excite, Hotel 50 Bowery celebrates the energy of New York’s unique neighborhoods with complex design style inspired by past history and future hopes. Vivre\u2019s signature custom scent overtook the city\u2019s musty air. His scent followed us on through the hotel, engaging the rest of our senses along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinatown is a melting pot where cultures merge, overlap, and blend. Mirroring the neighborhood, Hotel 50 Bowery\u2019s historic location gives pieces from the past a new purpose in the present. The materials used in the lobby are true to their origins. Poured concrete and exposed brick enhanced by Asain-influenced furniture. Blending old and new, the lobby gently oriented us to further experiences within the hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gritty mix of New York industrial materials and Asain Heritage tells the unique story of the evolving neighborhood. Being immersed in local cultural, without having to sacrifice convenient entry to the rest of the city makes this hotel rare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lobby<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

While checking in, we transported back to ancient China by a perforated Corten steel screen that opened up to the reception desk. Thus, allowing reclaimed wood to find a new meaning. Located underneath Hotel 50 Bowery sat a famous pub, The Bulls Head Tavern. Using the original brick from the site, makes history come alive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A traditional Moon Gate filled with amber seeded glass provides a peek into the adjacent restaurant. Overflowing with energy, the restaurant brings another layer into the lobby space. Light fixtures fill the ceiling, beckoning you into the space. Giving a nod to the Man Mo Temple in Hong Kong, the lighting mirrors the enchanting experience of looking up in a temple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hotel welcomes guests with artistic energy, Asian-centric cuisine, and playful design. Hotel 50 Bowery is a destination in itself for tourists and locals to come experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Rooms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During our visit, we stayed in a two double bed City View room. A contemporary aesthetic with touches of Asain heritage juxtaposed against sprawling city views lets you see forward while reflecting on the destinations past.

\"Dim<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Stepping out of the elevator, be transported to a vibrate Chinese village at dusk. Dimly lit works of art from Dake Wong, a Beijing-based graffiti artist lead you down the hallway. Bold red doors mark each guest-room entrance, enticing you to see inside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Deluxe<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Bright light fills the room courtesy of floor-to-ceiling windows. Familiar materials like distressed oak floors and luxe lines complement traditional Chinese colors of blue and white. Each room has a signature hand-plastered headboard. Local abstract artwork adds bold colors. While, vintage black and white photos of Chinatown add contrast. Reflecting on the destination\u2019s past while focusing on modern design made the room truly unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Sofa<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Conveniences include versatile desks, mini refrigerators, and our personal favorite: honor bars. They were stocked with sweet, savory, and healthy items. There even is a \u2018Mini Intimacy Kit.’ Thus, ensuring every need you have is met. And, in true \u2018a city that never sleeps\u2019 fashion, every guest has access to the 24-hour fitness center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Bathroom<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The bathroom featured trendy New York subway tiles, and Lefroy Brooks rain showerheads (to die for!). Jonathan Adler bath amenities\u2014custom-scented with Joe de Vivre\u2019s signature scent was of course included. Lucky for us, a corner room. This meant extra city views even from the bathroom. We are still dreaming about how amazing the shower with a city view was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rooftop Bar,\u00a0The\u00a0Crown<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Taking a break from the hectic city, we sipped cocktails at the 21st-floor rooftop bar and lounge. The Crown is one of the only places in the city that offers views of both the Brooklyn and Manhattan skyline. Unfortunately, we did not have the chance to try one of Gates Otsuji’s signature cocktail’s because they are not available on the weekends. Plush seating, neon artwork work, and floor-to-ceiling windows make The Crown the perfect place for indoor and outdoor experiences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Sofa<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Stop by for The Crown Rooftop\u2019s new seasonal experience, \u201cRoyal Summer.\u201d It is designed to evoke a care-free summer lifestyle. \u201cRoyal Summer\u201d features acoustic sets and music by renowned DJ\u2019s, curated art installations, branded partnerships, and everyone’s favorite sunshine activity: weekend brunch parties. Specialty events at the Crown will take place all summer long. So, it a definite go-to for both locals and tourists alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

History at the Hotel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Museum<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Further enhancing the destinations abundant history, the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) installed a permanent exhibit, The Gallery. Located on the second floor of the hotel, the 1,500-square-foot-exhibit, titled The Heart of China, highlights Chinatown\u2019s core streets: Bayward, Bowery, Canal, Doyers, Elizabeth, Mott, and Pell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibit showcases artifacts that were found at the hotel\u2019s construction site. In addition, items from the Chu Families personal collection are incorporated. Crisp white walls and poured concrete give the collection a simplistic, yet sophisticated background design. An oversized map of the neighborhood suspends over the Community Center. For instance, guests can look up and experience a unique inverted bird\u2019s eye view of Chinatown.

\"Community<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Adjacent in the Community Center, is the Atlantic Garden. An outdoor space named after the historic beer hall that occupied the site in the 1850s. This is a perfect place to relax and have leisure time after a long day exploring the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Neighborhood <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Walking through Chinatown, located in the Lower East Side, there is never a dull moment. There is no shortage of history and activities to emerge yourself into the local culture.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Surrounding<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

No Chinatown trip is complete without visiting Temple Mahayana. This is the oldest Chinese temple on the east coast. The interior of the holy institution is guarded by two majestic golden lions. Inside, features a 16-foot tall statue of Buddha sitting atop a lotus flower. Photos surrounding the walls portray his various pivotal life events\u2014a beautiful expression of Chinese culture and architecture.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To escape the hectic streets of the city, take a visit to Columbus Park. This historically significant park is located in the heart of Chinatown. Thus, making it the ideal demonstration of the neighborhood\u2019s rich diversity. It exhibits mingling of residents from all different backgrounds and walks of life. Here you will see locals meeting to do everything from playing chess to just sitting down reading a book. This is the true way to feel a part of the local Chinatown culture.

Busy streets, historical galleries, local cuisine, temples, informative museums, and landmarks within the community capture the Chinese-American experience and tell the story of history, growth, and successes, making it a truly unique spot in the concrete jungle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
