All over the world, women empowerment advocates know the landmark case of Roe v Wade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jane Roe’s name now protects the identity of a teen pregnant woman. She wanted the right over her reproductive choices, including the right to abort. District Attorney, Henry Wade, represented the state of Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case appeared before the Supreme Court in 1973. Roe won the case, and for many women, this was a triumphant moment in the battle for women\u2019s rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interference in abortion is ruled unconstitutional<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The reason Roe won the case was that the Supreme Court found that interference in abortions was unconstitutional. The government didn\u2019t have the authority to interfere in abortion and family planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon after this, there were two other landmark decisions. They emphasized that no state could prohibit a women\u2019s access to abortive care until fetal viability. This would be about 23-24 weeks of pregnancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fourth Amendment protects the right to liberty, on which the Casey and Roe decisions were both based.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year 2021 proved to be one of the worst years ever for U.S. abortion rights. In the first six months of the year, state legislatures enacted 90 abortion restrictions. This was the most in any year since the Roe v. Wade decision. With every new restriction, there were more patient barriers to care. The impact has been evident, especially in regions where groups of states are hostile to abortion.\u00a0Some states ban abortion at any point in pregnancy except when a patient\u2019s life is threatened. Others have bans on abortion relating to the number of weeks a woman has been pregnant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many state laws have imposed restrictions on abortion clinics and providers. There are states that will enforce criminal action against pregnant women who abort and the medical doctors that assist them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overturning of Roe v. Wade<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Roe v Wade verdict. It stated that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. The authority to regulate abortions should be in the hands of elected representatives of the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many women all over the world saw this as a significant setback to women\u2019s rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aftermath <\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the aftermath of the verdict, many more states are likely to ban abortions or institute various limitations. Some states have \u2018fetal heartbeat\u2019 laws<\/a> that allow termination once a heartbeat is detected. This can be as early as six to eight weeks into a pregnancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overturning of Roe v Wade is worrying as the U.S. plays a role in winning human and women\u2019s rights on a global basis. Activists across the globe worry that the Supreme Court decision may influence other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renewed efforts can help withdraw U.S. funding for reproductive health care. There are already many hurdles women face when getting access to reproductive care. This decision will likely increase the struggles of women who are already outcast and find it difficult to access care.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wrapping Up<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Overturning Roe v Wade could roll back some hard-won advances over a period of 50-odd years and encourage anti-choice movements. The decision could cause harm to women and families in the U.S., and the damage could reverberate around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
