The boudoir is defined as a woman&#8217;s private sitting room or salon, often near the bedroom or one with it. The term derives from the French verb <em>bouder (to sulk or pout) or the <\/em>adjective <em>boudeur <\/em>(sulking), a name given to the room which was originally a space for sulking in or withdrawing from society. Read on to see a stunning boudoir design recovered from Paris&#8217; H\u00f4tel de Crillon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>A Historic French Boudoir from H\u00f4tel de Crillon<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The now renowned H\u00f4tel de Crillon, set at the foot of the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es, is a Parisian <em>monument historique<\/em>. In 1758, King Louis XV commissioned the stone palace along with a second to form the Place de la Concorde. The western building, now H\u00f4tel de Crillon, was first occupied by Louis Marie Augustin, duc d&#8217;Aumont. A famous patron of the arts and owner of this stunning boudoir decorated with delightful painted paneling.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"710\" height=\"992\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lovehappensmag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Hotel-de-Crillon-3.jpg\" alt=\"H\u00f4tel de Crillon boudoir\" class=\"wp-image-80054\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lovehappensmag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Hotel-de-Crillon-3.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.lovehappensmag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Hotel-de-Crillon-3-215x300.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On view at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/art\/collection\/search\/199496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Met Fifth Avenue<\/a> in New York City, the space was designed by architect Pierre-Adrien P\u00e2ris for the duc d&#8217;Aumont. A man of taste and a significant art collector, the duke hired P\u00e2ris to design his new home. P\u00e2ris studied in Rome, partly at the duke&#8217;s expense. Thus, making him most likely familiar with early sixteenth-century decorative wall paintings. Creations executed by the likes of Raphael and his assistants in the Vatican loggias. A look that clearly inspired the embellishment of the paneling in this space. Seen in particular in the use of charming, lighthearted motifs such as animals and rolling acanthus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Painted by an unknown artist, the exterior windows of this intimate polyhedral boudoir gave access to a balcony with views toward the rue des Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es (now the rue Boissy d\u2019Anglas). Four mirrors set into the wall paneling, each angled to reflect the arabesque decoration. In The Met exhibition, the mirror inside the niche is a replacement for the original pane of clear glass that allowed light to shine into the stairwell behind the room.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"710\" height=\"986\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lovehappensmag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Hotel-de-Crillon-4.jpg\" alt=\"H\u00f4tel de Crillon boudoir\" class=\"wp-image-80055\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lovehappensmag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Hotel-de-Crillon-4.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.lovehappensmag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Hotel-de-Crillon-4-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Boudoir Furnishings<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the 1782 inventory drawn up after the duke\u2019s death, the boudoir featured four stools, two armchairs, and an ottoman, or comfortable sofa, described as having three backs. Most likely, the stools went under one of the mirrors. And the ottoman, complete with cushions, pillows, and bolsters in the niche. However, the woodwork of the room stayed in the building. Six years later, Fran\u00e7ois-F\u00e9lix-Doroth\u00e9e des Balbes de Berton, comte de Crillon (1748\u20131820), acquired the hotel, and it remained the property of his descendants until the early
