Between 1984 and 1985, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) and Andy Warhol (1928-1987) created around 160 paintings together in tandem, <\/em>\u201c\u00e0 quatre mains\u201d, including some of the largest works produced during their respective careers. Keith Haring (1958-1990), who witnessed their friendship and collaboration production, would go on to speak of a <\/em>\u201cconversation occurring through painting, instead of words\u201d and of two minds merging to create a <\/em>\u201cthird distinctive and unique mind”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map at Whitney Museum of American Art<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

April 19 \u2013 August 13<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This exhibition is the first New York retrospective of Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (b. 1940, citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation), an overdue but timely look at the work of a groundbreaking artist. Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map brings together nearly five decades of Smith\u2019s drawings, prints, paintings, and sculptures in the largest and most comprehensive showing of her career to date.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence at Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

March 18 \u2013 October 15<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American artist Kehinde Wiley\u2019s new body of paintings and sculptures confronts the silence surrounding systemic violence against Black people through the visual language of the fallen figure. It expands on his 2008 series, Down \u2014 a group of large-scale portraits of young Black men inspired by Hans Holbein the Younger\u2019s The Dead Christ in the Tomb (1521\u20131522). Wiley investigates the iconography of death and sacrifice in Western art, tracing it across religious, mythological, and historical subjects.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It explores how the royal Achaemenid court of Persia used precious objects as markers of authority, defining a style of luxury that resonated across the empire from Egypt to India.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
