Top Interior Designers: Kelly Wearstler

Top Interior Designers: Kelly Wearstler
Known for what Architectural Digest calls a “fiercely glamorous approach,” Kelly Wearstler’s luxury fabrics and antique-inspired style define luxury interior design in 2017.
An L.A. Times best selling author, hotel interior design trailblazer and commissioned interior designer for some of California’s biggest stars, Kelly first jumped into the design world with her firm, Kelly Wearstler Interior Design, in 1995. Since then, her acute eye for detail — lately, lots of metallic gold and muted, dark patterns — has flooded into every interior design firm and lifestyle magazine, including her guest editorship at InStyle in 2014.
“I look at every piece of furniture and every object as an individual sculpture,” Kelly famously told Elle Decor in 2009.
As 2018 approaches, Kelly Wearstler is pushing contemporary interior design, including winter whites, luxury accent pieces, selective darks, and, of course, designer pet accessories. Check out her gift guide when you’re taking a break from Thanksgiving prep this week. (Kelly truly has one of the best interior design websites around. Even her website is beautiful!)
Kelly Wearstler furniture and lighting are the famous interior designer’s signatures — featuring delicate, sophisticated, bold shapes and cozy, muted colors — but her Instagram is where you’ll find her latest inspirations. She keeps it simple, but elegant and innovative, just like her iconic, modern pieces.
Her designs are often inspired by the design she was exposed to by her mother, an antique dealer, when she was growing up.
“By acquiring all of your furniture from different eras and places, and things that are expensive and inexpensive,” Kelly told Elle in 2013, “it will make your end product have great spirit.”
She’ll also occasionally feature her two sons, Elliott and Oliver — but most of all, her adorable pup, Willie, who is often seen lounging on her patterned rugs.
In addition to her vast boutique interior design experience, Kelly has dominated the design industry all-around, winning numerous awards — from Vogue’s “Top 10 Best Dressed” in 2007 to Elle Decor’s Best Designers A-List in 2015 and AD’s AD100 last year.
She told Vogue in 2014 that she’s used to spreading herself across industries with ease. “I’m a great multitasker,” she said. “Probably from all my years waiting tables!”
Kelly is also known for her impeccable fashion sense — another skill captured on her design-heavy Instagram.
We’ll leave you with some of Kelly’s best advice to ponder as you browse her designs below: “Love color. Take risks. Stay curious.”
