A Personal Reset Routine That Actually Works

Over time, the pressures of daily life can accumulate to the point that they become difficult to handle. You might find yourself surrounded by junk and clutter, or snowed under at work, or buckling under the stress of juggling childcare duties.

For those who find themselves in this situation, it can be a good idea to take a step back and perform a ‘reset’. This might mean going to a special effort to restore a little bit of order, which might be easier to maintain going forward.

Too often, however, we find ourselves reverting to old habits, just a few weeks after the reset. So, how can we do things differently?

Physical Declutter: One Zone at a Time

An effective declutter is one that proceeds in stages. Like any other major task, it can be made more manageable by breaking it down. Start with one specific area. This can be a drawer, a desk, or an entire room. Put every loose item into one of three separate piles: one of things to keep, one of things to throw away, and one of things to sell.

Having done this, you’ll have reclaimed a little bit of mental clarity – which can be leveraged elsewhere in your life.

Re-Energise Your Environment with a Simple Refresh

You might find that a few choice changes to your environment can make a big difference to your state of mind and your overall mood. Try leaving windows ajar or installing a houseplant. Having gone to the effort of decluttering, you might find it much easier to make sensible decisions and craft the environment in the right way.

In some cases, the addition of the right furniture can make it much easier to store things and to retain control of your junk. For example, you might use an Ottoman bed to create a focal point and to conceal clutter in a stylish, elegant way.

Establish One Gentle Habit Before Bed

Getting into the right habits before bed can make a big difference to the way that you live your life the following day. You might drink herbal tea to get yourself relaxed or spend a few minutes jotting your thoughts down in a journal. Stretching, bathing, or playing a musical instrument can all provide your mind with a cue that it’s time for a change.

Check In With Your Calendar and Commitments

A personal reset can often involve clawing back a little bit of time for your own personal priorities. Make a point every Sunday of reviewing your commitments for the coming week. If any of them don’t align with your longer-term goals and objectives, then it might be time to scrap them.

Plan One Joyful Thing to Look Forward To

If you don’t have anything to look forward to, then you might find it difficult to stick to your would-be habits. After all, life can’t be just a relentless quest for self-improvement. With rewards, such a thing might well be unsustainable. Schedule time to do something you enjoy, whether that’s walking, going for a drink, or reading for an hour or so.
