All About DIMORESTUDIO and Their Exhibits at Milan Design Week 2018

Known for their vibrant colors, unique detail, and entwined historical elements, DIMORESTUDIO has flourished as an interior design powerhouse over the past 15 years. Founders Britt Moran and Emiliano Salci gained design exposure at a young age, inspiring their love of furniture and interiors, and paving the way for their imminent success. Most recently the duo shared their talent for blurring the line between art, design, and fashion in their hometown with three performance-like exhibitions on via Solferino for Milan Design Week 2018.

In their DIMOREGALLERY at via Solferino 11, the studio revealed “Transfer,” an emotive exhibit dedicated to designs by a selection of 20th century masters. With pieces by Carlo Mollino, Angelo Lelli, Gio Ponti, Carlo Scarpa and more, many set in fabric tents, the exhibition, as suggested by its title “Transfer”, takes visitors on a voyage through an archive of cultures and aesthetics.

Designed especially for Milan Design Week, DIMORESTUDIO’s second space, also located at their via Solferino 11 location, titled “Perfettammente imperfetto” (Perfectly imperfect), is all about their brands latest creations. New pieces for their “Progetto Non Finito” and”Oggetti” collections featuring designs which elegantly juxtapose simplicity with 1960s and 70s early Italian modernism are displayed throughout the primarily-white walled space.

“Limited Edition”, DIMORESTUDIO’s third exhibition for Milan Design Week 2018, is located down the street at via Solferino 22 and will be open for the entire month of May. On display are nine designs which Emiliano Salci created by deconstructing and refinishing classic 19th and 20th-century pieces of furniture. The exhibit space is an experiential work of art as well with intense purple floors, music, smoke, and dramatic lighting.

In 2003, Britt Moran and Emiliano Salci decided to join creative forces. They chose the name “dimore,” translating to “dwellings” in Italian. The meaning signifies the brand’s vision to unify both ancient and modern worlds through their brilliant creations.

Britt was raised in North Carolina where he was exposed to classical furnishing at a young age. After studying biology and classics at UNC he moved to Milan to teach English where he fell in love with the country and then interior design.
Emiliano grew up in Tuscany where his father owned a modern furniture gallery which he later took over. His gallery work led to a key position as art director for Giulio Cappellini where he worked with Jasper Morrison and Tom Dixon.
After being introduced by friends the pair clicked immediately. Although not romantically involved the two have lived together since founding DIMORESTUDIO. In an interview with W Magazine they said they liken their relationship to that of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. Britt told Stephen Heyman “We have separate rooms and kind of separate lives, but we cook together, and we have our chats in the morning. Maybe to get everything done, we need to spend as much time together as possible.” Salci, added that they have tried living apart, but “we’re too fond of each other.”

Their design work began with private residences for key clients and like any true talent the more they worked the more they gained recognition and were sought out by more prominent names. Their studio has collaborated with fashion houses like Hermes, Bottega Veneta and Fendi, and hoteliers Ian Schrager and Thierry Costes. In 2014 their stunning interior work at the exclusive rooftop poolside bar Cersario 7 above the Dsquared showroom in Milan was unveiled bringing the pair even further into the spotlight.

DIMORESTUDIO’s love affair with Fendi also began in 2014 with a collection of pieces designed for the fashion house’s home division and launched at Design Miami. In 2016 Britt and Emiliano designed the much-acclaimed Palazzo Fendi VIP apartment in Rome. Their most recent collaboration with Fendi was in 2017 for their first boutique for the brand, an opulent and retro interior for Fendi’s Sloane Street location in London.

DIMORESTUDIO put another design stamp on London in 2017 with the redesign of The Arts Club, Leo’s.

Both with histories in furniture, it comes as no surprise that the pair began producing furniture in Italy in 2006, beginning with a collection of chairs, sofas, lighting, and bookshelves. Their furniture and accessory designs are all about mixing the past and present in exciting and innovative ways. And in 2008 they started DIMOREGALLERY as a place to showcase their designs and those of others that inspire them.
