Joana Vasconcelos x Roche Bobois: Art Meets Furniture
Joana Vasconcelos is always ready to challenge and criticize society on the status of women or class distinctions through her art. But in her recent collaboration with Roche Bobois Joana is the one being challenged. The task – to provide a fresh new interpretation and look to six of Roche Bobois’ most famous pieces for a collection called “A Arte de Viver”.
Roche Bobois provided two Ava chairs, the Laby B Armchairs and Nuage, the cocktail tables Sismic and Cute Cut, and also the Mah Jong Sofa as canvases for Joana to replicate the criticisms she makes on society in her art on.
“Roche Bobois is particularly proud to be associated with the multiple talents of Joana Vasconcelos. Her artistic boldness, her creative brilliance and the poetry that emanates from her work gives a new scale of interpretation to our creations, which she diverts and reinterprets with brilliance. By associating creative work, design, and craftsmanship, this collaboration expresses the core values of Roche Bobois.CEO of Roche Bobois Group, Gilles Bonan
After completing her work the pieces took on a “sculptural dimension,” according to Joana’s atelier. Joana states she takes inspiration from everyday life and everyday materials from her native country, Portugal. She then incorporates them within her art, as she does in this partnership.
In honor of Joana’s contribution, “A Arte de Viver” was first revealed in Lisbon, Portugal on May 19th. The collection will tour across Europe before crossing the Atlantic in December. Finally, it will auction at Art Basel Miami 2019. All auction proceeds will go to the Joana Vasconcelos Foundation. A foundation which helps provide for people who choose art as a career path. Until June 24th Joana’s addition of complexity to Roche Bobois’ already stunning pieces will be in Porto, Portugal.
