7 Fashion Trends We Love in 2020

2020 Fashion Trends

We’re in a whole new decade! That means we get a whole new set of fashion trends to start it off. While we do recycle so many trends (and hopefully items) each decade, we do create new ones as well. It will be interesting to see what fashion trends we adopt and what we recycle in 2020 when we have so much to choose from. Style evolves in the zeitgeist and our personal lives, and we’re more than happy to see things change.

We can predict what is trending already based on runway shows, social media, and what we observe in our own communities and cultures. And these trends are exciting! With an explosive last few years globally, fashion, like entertainment, is still something we hold on to for joy and for sanity. It can bring us together and remind us how much creativity brings us and the world so much joy.

Before we get too sappy over here, we need to identify which fashion trends we love so far in 2020 and this decade. Based on the runways, what we see around us, and what we see ourselves gravitating towards and wanting to try, these trends are here to stay.

7 Fashion Trends We Love in 2020

1) Suit Up

Suits aren’t just for menswear anymore. In fact, in the past couple of decades, there’s been a major hole closing in the divide between styles of menswear and womenswear. Nowadays, binaries are boring, androgyny rules, and suits are for everyone (honestly, so are dresses). With fashion becoming more and more inclusive, there are so many more options.

Which brings us back to suits. Suits are back in a big way, and this trend is set to be major in 2020. Whether they are bold and bright, black and sleek, patterned up, or short and sweet, you’re guaranteed to see all these suits in the streets.

2) Most Definitely on the Fringe

The good news is in abundance because the fringe is back! Fringe has never been just for cowboys and can add something funky (in a good way) to an already cool jacket or dress. The deconstructionists in us are screaming.

While we saw a fringe good bit at the festival circuit during the early 2010s, it’s coming back in a more mature way this decade. Instead of crop tops and vests meant to emulate the Woodstock crowd of the late 1960s, fringe is being used more elegantly these days.

3) Ruffling Your Feathers and Everywhere Else

Suffice to say feathers aren’t coming back (that’s only for the most adventurous fashionistas among us), but ruffles certainly are one of the 2020 fashion trends to note. Another trend we did see more towards the middle of the 2010s, ruffles are a feminine way to add volume to a look.

Remember the peplum trend that blew up during the later 2010s? That was born from the initial ruffle trend. Also, something that was huge in the 1970s (mostly with blouses), ruffles are making it onto bathing suits, gowns, blouses, and even jackets.

4) Paint Your Leather

Leather has always been a staple trend in popular culture, though it can also be brushed off as a more theatrical way of dressing depending on how much of it you’re wearing. A good leather jacket is something pretty much everyone should have in their closet (unless they’re vegan).

What’s changing about leather attire in this decade is its color. Instead of the black and brown that’s usually associated with leather jackets and other leather goods, leather in 2020 is getting bright and standing out. Think bright pinks and greens instead of the James Dean classic.

The best way to style this new trend is as a statement piece. Brightly colored leather is unique and should be able to stand on its own. Pair it with something sleek like slim black pants and even a simple black t-shirt (if you’re wearing a bright red leather jacket) or make the whole piece your statement with a pink leather dress, pulled back hair, simple jewelry from a brand like https://jewelrylab.co, and neutral makeup.

5) Keep Your Eye on the Polka Dot

Patterns come and go, but some classics stick around. The polka dot trend has been around forever, and it’s not planning on leaving anytime soon. Polka dots are back in full force in 2020, whether on blouses, dresses, or skirts. And these aren’t just your regular old polka dots appearing in fashion. Many designers showed looks that were meant to emphasize the polka dot and highlight it through pattern making in new ways.

If you’re looking to style your polka dots right, then it’ll totally be dependent on how loud the pattern is as well as the color. Polka dots basically speak for themselves. You don’t have to add much else to stand out. There can even be a way to implement multiple trends at once with a polka dot suit!

6) More Metallics

Who said that metallics were only meant for your New Year’s Eve to look? Metallics can be sassy year-round, and now this trend is being implemented into more than just dresses. Much like the polka dot trend, metallics can be a part of several different 2020 trends. Metallic leather jacket, here you come.

Metallics can really be anywhere. From shoes to belts to pantsuits. This is a trend for those of us who aren’t afraid to shine for those of us who, in fact, want to. If you’re looking for a way to style your metallics, know that this trend is meant to be all about the bigger, the better, wear your metallics loud and proud, you’re worth it.

7) A Whole Mesh of Netting

Netting is something that’s totally coming back and hasn’t been entirely left in the 1980s. Netting is being woven into all different types of clothing and accessories, including handbags, t-shirts, dresses, pants, and jackets. It can even be used for sportswear and swimwear.

This versatile material is unstoppable but delicate. Make sure you’re taking care of the netting, so you aren’t just a whole mess of rips.
