The Design Questionnaire with Charlie’s Designs LLC
In this edition of Love Happens’ Proust-style Design Questionnaire, join us for a peek inside the creative design mind of Charlie A. Bolivar, founder of Charlie’s Designs LLC. Based in New York City, Charlie is most happy when doing what he loves: changing lives through design! He works with clients in a variety of settings – from residential to commercial design. And he loves to find creative solutions to the challenges of everyday living.
About Charlie’s Designs LLC
Charlie Bolivar is an interior designer with over 20 years of design consultancy experience. He has worked in multiple states across the US and overseas creating classic contemporary interiors, as well as designing special events. Through his firm, Charlie’s Designs LLC, he provides professional interior design, architectural interior design, and project management services.
At the age of 17, Charlie began working at the D&D building for a company named Decorators Walk. He started in the Sample Department, giving wallpaper samples and fabric samples to the decorators and their clients. He then moved onto assisting designers in decorating the showroom or placing new furniture to create rooms to look like homes. Eventually, he took over that responsibility and thus began his passion for interior design. He stayed in that position for over 10 years, while taking classes at Parsons School of Interior Design. During that time, he also worked for two amazing designers, Patrick Falco and Bob Johns.
He is a trusted member of IDS (The Interior Design Society, one of the country’s largest design organizations with more than 2,000 members). In addition, he is an approved member of Houzz and participates in the trade programs of several of the most prestigious furniture design companies and major furniture stores in the U.S.
Charlie’s Designs LLC delivers top-quality work and has received five-star reviews across various platforms including Google, Yelp, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, and others!
Charlie’s work has also been featured in multiple articles in the press and online (including with Magic Murals.com, Golden Paintworks, and BrewsterHome in the U.S., Capital Moments magazine in the U.K., and Lumas in Budapest, Hungary). He has also been featured in various radio interviews, including with U.S. Business Talk Radio and Empire Radio in New York. In addition, Charlie was selected by Shutterfly to design its Thanksgiving Day commercial aired on CBS.
A Passion for Feng Shui
Charlie’s passion for design extends to natural elements and he incorporates Feng Shui into his work. What is Feng Shui? This is a simple question that can be difficult to answer. Feng Shui is an ancient art and science developed over 3,000 years ago in China. It is a complex body of knowledge that reveals how to balance the energies of any given space to assure the health and good fortune for people inhabiting it.
A Peek Inside the Fabulous and Inspiring Mind of Charlie Bolivar with the Lh Design Questionnaire
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
To be home – just relaxing while watching a good movie with my husband!
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
When I was 24 years old and I purchased my first apartment! I took years of working hard at various jobs (usually more than one at the same time) and saving up.
What profession does your alter ego have?
A CEO of a major corporation!
The project you will never forget.
I recently worked with a really great family in Queen, NY who wanted to turn their older home into a more modern, open floor plan – however, the biggest challenge was that the first floor comprised four different rooms where we needed to break into each of those rooms to create the perfect, new open floor plan that they wanted. We finally managed to come up with a good design that also worked from a structural point of view, and the results are beautiful.
Your favorite business tool or resource.
It’s an overall guideline rather than an actual tool: To always place my clients’ needs at the top of the list for the overall design first, before focusing on anything else.
The most timeless design.
It should be something that is minimalistic with very clean lines.
The biggest design faux pas.
Ordering the wrong size furniture, that could be one of the biggest and costliest mistakes that you could make. If the furniture is too large for the available space (or too small!) it will be impractical for everyday living and will make the design obviously flawed – while returning and exchanging it can become a logistical challenge that costs the client a lot of money.
Your design motto.
To be super patient with my clients, because making design decisions are not always easy and you can’t rush it if you want to get things “right”!
If you were to design a room around one KOKET piece, which would it be, and why?
I love the appearance of their Enchanted table! I would love to design an entire dining room around it, I can visualize it in a large nice sunroom or even in a breakfast room. It could be the centerpiece of an amazing, welcoming design.
Love happens when…
When you least expect it!
