Illuminating Art with Ian Cameron & Cameron Design House

Founded in 2014 by Ian Cameron, Cameron Design House creates stunning, bespoke light installations that reflect exceptional craftsmanship. Each piece is thoughtfully designed and handcrafted in Britain, with their workshop in Hertfordshire serving as the creative hub for the team of skilled artisans.

The award-winning design house is behind some of the most impressive and finely crafted lighting fixtures in modern interior design. The studio has proudly partnered with notable brands such as Edelman, Steinway & Sons, Romo, and participated in Holiday House events in NYC and the Hamptons.

Cameron’s newest design, Koru, the fabulous hand-carved alabaster chain link work of lighting art above, launched today at the London design fair Decorex! Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at the man behind the captivating creations in this edition of Love Happens’ Design Questionnaire.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

James Bond, Alley Cats pizza, and a pot of Hackney Gelato, always the Dark Chocolate Sorbetto.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

I always feel incredibly proud when I see our pieces being made in our UK workshops before being sent out to iconic projects around the world. We’ve made pieces for projects all over—New Zealand, the USA, Europe, Middle East, and more. I recently was watching Succession and spotted our Haara Metsa in a scene that was filmed in the penthouse of the Woolworth Building in New York!

What profession does your alter ego have?

I’d say a racing car driver. Having just bought a racing car to refurbish with my dad—a former racing driver himself—it would be an absolute dream to be around incredible cars on a daily basis. We’re currently restoring an SR90 Hill Climbing Formula Renault Race Car from the ’90s, making parts on the lathe, and bringing it back to its original glory. Cars have always been a huge passion of mine, and working on this project with my dad is incredibly special.

The design you will never forget.

The Lohja, which was one of my first designs ten years ago when I founded Cameron Design House, has become an iconic piece. Suspension cables that integrate the electrical elements ensure the piece looks like a hanging piece of sculptural light art and is beautiful whether on or off.

Your favorite design material.

There are elements of brass present in all of our pieces, so I’d say it has to be one of my favourites. It’s such a versatile material, giving our artisans the power to craft sculptural forms in such a variety of beautiful finishes.

Plaster is another one of my favourite materials for during the prototyping phase. It’s so tactile and fast-setting, allowing me to make things quickly.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by everything around me, especially the natural beauty of the Finnish landscape, which deeply influences my work. My Finnish heritage has always been a significant source of inspiration. Whenever I return from visiting home, I feel most creatively rejuvenated. The clean lines and unmatched beauty of the country continually fuel my creativity and design inspiration.

Your design mission or motto.

Crafting timeless designs inspired by the natural beauty of my Finnish heritage. Blending organic forms with meticulous craftsmanship to create pieces that resonate with elegance and authenticity, all proudly manufactured in Britain.

Our Portugal-based publisher, KOKET, also makes décor. What comes to your mind when you imagine a collaboration between Cameron Design House and KOKET?

Last September, we launched our debut furniture collection, Kupoli, marking a significant expansion from our lighting collection into the world of furniture. It’s an area we’re eager to push further, and collaborating with other brands and designers would be an exciting way to innovate. I have a sketchbook full of ideas, and I’m excited about the possibility of prototyping new designs—there’s definitely a lot of new pieces in our future!

Love Happens when…

…when you’re least expecting it.
