A Glimpse at Janet Morais’ Love for Materials

What’s your earliest memory of loving a material?

I was first exposed to arts and crafts in Europe around 3rd grade, I think I would have to say this began my passion for the beauty of materials.

What is your favorite material?

I love textiles! From fashion to home decor, textiles of all kinds are one of my absolute favorite material categories.

What do the material choices in your newest piece, the Empress Console, bring to the design of this piece?

The Empress embodies so much of my love for the art of materials. Rock crystals have a history of balancing and harmonizing emotions. They are also known as symbols of enlightenment and connections to higher beings. I love how a material in its raw form can symbolize something so pure. This is what led to my choice of natural rock crystal and raw metal for this piece, a reminder that imperfection can be just as beautiful and valuable as perfection.

Is there a material you want to work with and haven’t had a chance to yet?

I would love to work with metal threads/yarns. And with Murano glass.

When you think of the power of materials in design, what comes to mind?

Endless possibilities and the only opportunity we have to be truly unique.
