Sunlit Interior Design with Kim Gordon in the LH Design Questionnaire

Los Angeles based designer Kim Gordon leads her eponymous design firm on projects for private clients and real estate investors across the globe. A lover of beauty since a young age, Kim followed this passion into the business of interior design, launching her firm in 2014. Southern California sunlight, an ocean breeze, local florals, a mix of old and new, bold art, and a touch of wellness living are Kim Gordon Designs essentials.

Lh Design Questionnaire with Kim Gordon

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Traveling around the US and the world sneaking into hotels to check out the public spaces and beg the concierge to show me a room or two. I absolutely adore going to hotels to meet friends or have a meeting. I love being exposed to new environments and sharing it with friends. Hotels these days are plentiful and inspiring. The service is better than in a restaurant and you can linger for hours people watching or getting work done.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Being able to pivot when necessary in work and in life. Being open to the signs in front of us to make a change or subtly shift to make a project better. Being too close or too committed to an Idea can blind you to new possibilities. Facing cancer and living with that fear fuels me to create and live joyfully.

What profession does your alter ego have?
My alter ego is a writer—and does she have some stories!
The project you will never forget.
I will not forget any of our projects nor the people involved. But if there were just one I’d say it would be our Amalfi project. I am super proud of the flow of that home. Really special.
Your favorite business tool or resource.
Probably our rolling design office: an RV! The outstanding Travato.
The most timeless design.
Anything by Kerry Joyce!
The biggest design faux pas.
Getting the scale wrong with furniture…nothing bugs me more. A chair or table that is not in harmony with the rest of the pieces will throw off an entire room, and often you won’t know exactly what it is until you realize you are always staring at that one piece. You can mess up patterns, but if the scale of the pattern is different from one another the playfulness will be ruined.

Your design motto.
Sunlight rules the architecture and the flow follows. The rooms almost furnish themselves when the flow is right.
Being open to new possibilities and listening to your client—you may learn something.
Our publisher, KOKET, makes statement décor. If you were to design a room around one of their pieces, which would it be, and why?
I am obsessed with KOKET’s Watermark Terra Leather. It is artwork and to cover a small powder room would be Oooh LaLa! 10.
Love Happens when
…the alchemy of everyone involved is in sync to create something beautiful and magical.
