Escape the Winter Blues: Simple Ways to Lift Your Mood This Season

Winter can be a stressful and depressing time of year. According to recent polling, around a third of us experience a downturn in mood, associated with the changing weather, and the shorter daylight hours. So, how can we deal with this problem?
Get Outdoors and Embrace Natural Light
The more daylight you’re exposed to, the healthier your levels of melatonin and serotonin become. These hormones, both derived from the amino acid tryptophan, help us respectively to get to sleep, and to feel good.
Getting out and about during winter is therefore critical, especially on seemingly grey days. You might go for a long walk in the park, of through the countryside.
Stay Active: Exercise as a Mood Booster
It isn’t just time outdoors that can help to restore your depleted mood. Regular exercise can help to keep you feeling great, especially if there’s a social component involved. You might do simple yoga and Pilates routines at home, or you might join a local club or team. Even short sessions can make a big difference, provided that they’re sufficiently intense.
Plan Social Activities and Connect with Others
If you don’t take the time to connect with those close to you, it’s more or less inevitable that your mood will suffer. Try to schedule catch-ups with your closest friends, and volunteer to do charitable activities (with outdoor activities being preferable). This is what will help you to fend off that nagging sense of isolation.
Try Something New: Creative and Seasonal Hobbies
If you have a creative outlet, then you might provide yourself with something to look forward to, and something for your mind to get absorbed in. You might sit down at a piano, or bake a cake, or even paint a massive mural for your child’s bedroom. Whatever your preferences, the right hobby can give you a valuable sense of purpose and achievement, which can be invaluable during winter.
In some cases, it can even rewire your brain and provide more enduring mental health benefits.
Escape for a Change of Scenery
If the weather in the UK is at the root of your problems, then making a switch to a sunnier part of the world might be exactly what’s called for. This might mean escaping to a beach resort. Or, the mountain air and physical exercise of the best ski holidays might be worth considering.
