Retrofitting Motorised Blinds in a House With No Wiring for Them

The reason most people never automate their windows is not the blinds. It is the sentence that follows the quote, which is usually about chasing a channel up the wall and re-plastering afterwards.

That assumption is now about ten years out of date, and it is quietly the reason a lot of houses have smart lighting, smart heating and a manual chain hanging by the window.

Mains, battery and solar, briefly

Three ways to power a blind, and they suit different situations.

Mains wiring is the right answer during a build or a full room refurbishment, when the wall is already open. It never needs charging, it drives the largest blinds, and it costs nothing extra to install at that stage. Outside those moments it is disproportionate.

Battery motors sit inside the tube and are charged with a cable every few months. No wiring, no plaster, no electrician, and they fit to an existing window in the same time as a manual blind.

Solar is a battery motor with a small panel on the glass. It suits a window that gets real sun and is a nuisance on one that does not.

For most retrofits the honest answer is battery, and battery-powered motorised blinds are what makes this a same-day job rather than a project.

What actually improves when a blind is automated

Worth being specific, because the case is usually made badly.

Windows you cannot reach. Above a stairwell, behind a sink, at the top of a tall room. These are the blinds nobody operates, so they sit in one position for years, and automation is the only thing that changes that.

Windows you would operate more if it were easier. A run of several across a rear extension is four or five separate actions to close, and in practice most households do it once and then stop. On a schedule, it happens every day.

And heat management, which is the one people underrate. A blind that closes automatically at the hour the sun hits the glass is doing something a manual blind only does if somebody is home and thinking about it.

Where it is not worth it

A single window in a room you are always in, at a comfortable height, is a manual blind. Automating it adds a battery to charge and a thing to pair, in exchange for saving a movement you were making anyway.

Very large or heavy blinds are also worth checking rather than assuming. A wide timber slatted blind is a lot of mass for a tube motor, and the specification is the supplier’s answer to give, not a guess.

Which format takes a motor best

Not all of them behave the same when driven.

A banded dual-fabric blind is one of the better candidates, because the value of the format is in adjusting it and a motor means it actually gets adjusted. Electric day and night blinds let you set a daytime position and an evening one and stop thinking about it.

Plain fabric rollers are the simplest mechanically and the cheapest to motorise, which makes them the sensible place to start if you are automating one window to see whether you like it. Remote-controlled roller blinds are the low-risk entry point for exactly that.

Two practical points before you order

Decide how you want to control it and check the blind supports that, rather than buying the blind and discovering the app later. Remote handset, wall switch, phone and voice are not all available on every motor.

And plan the charging. A battery motor in a room you go into every day is fine. Six of them at the top of a stairwell is a chore you have designed for yourself, and that is the window where mains or solar earns its cost.
