6 Ways to Empower Yourself to Create Change in the World
In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, in order to create change, you must “be the change that you wish to see in the world”. While this is easier said than done, there are ways to empower yourself and change the world for the better.
It all starts with you making a decision to create change and then taking the necessary steps to contribute to the greater good while influencing others to follow your lead and join you on your quest of making the world a better place.
Share your skills to educate others
Whether it’s a particular skill or a special talent that you have, sharing it with those around you is one of the greatest gifts you can give. Education is essential for growth, so if you are especially interested in a topic, consider sharing your knowledge with those closest to you.
Whether it means educating others on crucial matters affecting the world such as climate change, raising awareness about exploitation taking place in certain industries, or taking a step further and being proactive by starting petitions or becoming an activist, turning attention to things that truly matter is a great way to influence others to take a step in the right direction.
Support local businesses
Other than raising awareness about topics and things that matter, it’s important that you practice what you preach, especially when it comes to the things you consume on a daily basis. Whenever you’re buying something, remember that you’re voting with your wallet. By supporting certain products, you’re supporting certain businesses and practices. This is why you need to make sure that your purchases align with your values and that you’re shopping mindfully.
Big brands have been making it more challenging for smaller businesses to stay afloat for years, and the number of smaller businesses shutting down rose significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. By rethinking your consumption, buying your essentials locally, and encouraging others to do the same, you can make a positive change and help your local businesses survive during these trying times.
Lend a helping hand to medical professionals
With so many pressing issues our world is dealing with at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s easy to start feeling powerless and dwell on the negative. However, it is in these situations that we have to maintain a positive outlook on life and stay grounded, even when we’re overwhelmed by fear and anxiety, and start doing everything we can to power on through such times of uncertainty.
A good example of this is deciding to lend a helping hand to medical professionals by either pursuing a career in medicine or acquiring specialized ACLS and PALS certification online in order to empower yourself to bring better care to your patients as a healthcare professional. By supporting medical professionals, you can make a positive impact on the world long after the pandemic ends.
Look for opportunities to volunteer
Your time is one of the greatest, most precious gifts you can give, and this is why you want to make sure you’re using it wisely. There are so many ways to use your time more productively, and one of them is volunteering.
Depending on how much time you have on your hands, volunteering abroad or in your local community is a great way to help those who need help the most. Since volunteering is an act of selflessness, it’s also going to bring out the altruist in you and make you feel so much better. All it takes is exploring different opportunities for volunteering and finding a worthy cause to support.
Work on reducing your ecological footprint
We’re all aware that most human activities are detrimental to Mother Earth, but by treating our environment poorly, we are actually hurting ourselves. Polluted air, water, and soil, deforestation, overpopulation, and greenhouse gas emissions are just some of the ways we’re harming Mother Nature, causing our future to appear grim.
Lead others by example by treating Mother Nature with more kindness. Consider recycling/repurposing, switching to eco-friendly, natural, and sustainable products, and consuming less in general. Switching to a plant-based diet is another way to create change in the world. If it seems too much, try going meat-free on certain days of the week and work your way to a meat-free diet gradually.

Donate more often
Many of us have a couple of things lying around our homes that aren’t exactly being used on a regular basis. Whether they are a result of impulsive shopping or the need to accumulate things just in case, you’re better off giving away any superfluous items to people who actually need them.
You can also donate to homeless and women’s shelters or use your talents to make something you can donate to an organization. Finally, you can go a step further and register to be an organ donor and potentially save a couple of lives.
No matter how small a change may seem, every positive impact that we make on the world around us is going to add up. More often than not, these small changes will lead to bigger ones, motivating us to do even more. One by one, these changes can help us transform the world around us and make it a much better place to live not only for ourselves but also for future generations.
