For the 2020 edition of DesignMiami/ (on now through December 6th), Fendi decided to spice things up. First a new look for its Miami Design District boutique. Then a limited series of reimagined versions of its iconic Peekaboo bag. For this magnificent project, the luxury Italian fashion house invited one of the best in the business to collaborate, the New York-based visual artist, Sarah Coleman.

Sarah began her career working with one of the most iconic and famous artists in this industry, Peter Marino. Known for his stunning store designs for the most famous luxury brands, such as Louis Vuitton. Today, Sarah Coleman has built her own name by manipulating designer materials to rethink everyday objects through an ironic filter.

Sustainability is increasingly important in the world of fashion. Therefore, the artist bet on taking advantage of Fendi’s archives of vintage materials and pieces (which must be mind-boggling). She took inspiration from the 1970s and used fabrics from the brand’s handbags to create patchworks for etching and covering the furniture of the boutique.

In addition, Sarah created collages of images from vintage magazines that juxtaposed to Fendi’s archival photos and applied them on the unique Zig-Zag chair. She also covered a sofa with sustainable FF cotton and recycled polyester fabric. Inside and outside the store, Sarah applied a redefined fun yellow version of the Fendi brand’s striped Pequin motif.

3 Reimagined Peekaboo Bags

For this collaboration, Sarah Coleman worked with the creative director of Fendi, Silvia Venturini Fendi, who was the creator of the original design of the Peekaboo bag. Together the two created three limited series pieces: a Nappa version that glows in the dark with the Fendi logo embroidered in phosphorescent beads; another in the characteristic yellow tone of the brand; and a screen iteration adorned with multicolored thread.

Sarah also designed a one-of-a-kind canvas Peekaboo handbag for display in the Miami boutique. Emblazoned with kaleidoscopic paint and plaster, its bold colors are inspired by the city’s vibrant art scene.

The limited-edition Peekaboo ISeeU bags from Fendi and Sarah Coleman were launched exclusively at the Fendi Miami Design District boutique on November 27th, 2020.
