The Design Questionnaire with Dara Huang of Design Haus Liberty
In this edition of Love Happens’ Proust-style Design Questionnaire, join us for a peek inside the creative design mind of Dara Huang, founder of Design Haus Liberty. Based in London and Honk Kong, Design Haus Liberty works with funds, developers, office groups, retailers, and hoteliers to create eye-catching profitable spaces.
The daughter of a NASA scientist who emigrated from Taiwan to the United States, Dara Huang grew up in multi-cultural surroundings and with global travel. After earning her master’s degree in Architecture from Harvard University Dara began her career at Herzog de Meuron, Basel and Foster + Partners, London. Then in 2013, she decided to establish Design Haus Liberty in London. With zeal and talent, Dara has quickly grown DH Liberty into a design force. Today the international architecture, interiors, and design practice also has an office in Hong Kong.
Alongside their luxury clients such as The Four Seasons, LVMH, Cartier, and Starwood Capital, Dara has co-founded an affordable urban housing platform, Viva House, a sustainable, prefabricated system that combines operations with asset-light developments turning housing into a service. She is also interested in democratising design via an affordable and sustainable products ware company with entry-level pricing.
Passionate about creating value and leading design in market trends, DH Liberty expands the boundaries of the way architects tell stories through the built environment.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
A healthy baby, a wonderfully supportive partner, happy friends and family, and a steady business.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
My son.
What profession does your alter ego have?
I’m not sure. I’m Asian, I don’t have an ego. I said I’m not sure because I wonder what’s the ambition to do everything I want to do then? Must be an alter ego?
The project you will never forget.
In my first project ever, we made the showerhead too low. It’s good to make mistakes because you don’t ever forget that, as for the most amazing project, I believe that is yet to come. But, I’ll always consider Villa Mosca Bianca one of our greatest works.
Your favorite business tool or resource.
Google.
The most timeless design.
Scarpa, Mies, Le Corbusier, Louis Kahn.
The biggest design faux pas.
Copy and pasting classic historical buildings with no reinterpretation – like when you go to America and see copies of Greek/Roman mini-mansions.
Your design motto.
If I’m not excited about it nobody else will be.
If you were to design a room around one KOKET piece, which would it be, and why?
I like the Tears cocktail table, because, in my opinion, it is the best piece in the collection.
Love happens when…
You least expect it 🙂
