Cheryl, your journey into yacht interior design began under unique circumstances. Can you share what initially drew you into the field of interior design and how this passion evolved into specializing in yacht interiors?

Growing up amidst the historic charm of Newport, Rhode Island, along the iconic Bellevue Avenue, I was mesmerized by the grandeur of its Gilded Age mansions. My mother, a talented interior designer, often took me to these majestic homes, where I watched her skillfully blend textures, patterns, and colors to create harmonious spaces.

This formative experience ignited my passion for design, steering me towards a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Initially, my path led me to fashion design in Boston and later San Francisco, but it was upon my return to Rhode Island that I discovered my true calling in yacht interior design.

Reflecting on the early stages of your career, can you share some of the pivotal moments that helped launch your interior design career?

The real turning point in my career came when I joined a local yacht interior manufacturing firm. This opportunity was a deep dive into the intricacies of yacht design, where I learned not just about aesthetics but the technical specifics of yacht interiors. Over the course of 8 years, I designed hundreds of yacht interiors, working hand-in-hand with the fabrication teams to perfect my understanding of construction, materials, measuring procedures, and even stitching.

This comprehensive approach, focusing on every aspect of the process, from fabrication to installation, laid the foundation for my future success. These formative years were instrumental in shaping my approach to design, emphasizing the importance of detailed knowledge and hands-on experience in achieving excellence.

As I navigated the initial stages of setting up my business, I focused on chaining together small wins and building momentum with each step.

Starting a business from scratch is no small feat, especially as a single mother dealing with personal loss. What was the driving force behind your decision to start a yacht interior design business, and how did you navigate the initial stages of setting it up?

The loss of my parents, followed by the abrupt end of my job, was a period of profound reflection and determination. Faced with uncertainty, I saw an opportunity to fulfill my dream of starting my own design firm, Newport Yacht and Home. This leap of faith was driven by a desire to create a better future for my family and a deep-seated belief in my ability to bring joy and beauty into the lives of others through my design work. Despite not having a roadmap, the encouragement from past clients and the freedom to craft my own work environment propelled me forward. It was a testament to the power of resilience, passion, and the support of the community around me.

As I navigated the initial stages of setting up my business, I focused on chaining together small wins and building momentum with each step. From learning how to register my business with the Secretary of State to creating a website from scratch, each accomplishment fueled my journey. The grind of networking to secure those first few clients was both a challenge and a thrill, proving to myself that with dedication and hard work, I could turn my vision into reality. This approach of accumulating small victories not only helped me build a solid foundation for my business but also instilled a sense of confidence and momentum that has propelled me forward ever since.

Your journey is one of overcoming obstacles and achieving success in a male-dominated yacht construction industry. Can you discuss a moment when you felt you had finally ‘broken through’ and established yourself and your yacht design firm?

My ‘breakthrough’ moment came not from one event but through our consistent effort to deliver quality work on time, which gradually built our reputation for reliability in this demanding industry. Also, working with Hinckley Yachts on new builds was a significant milestone that affirmed our place in the field. Lastly, being recognized as a finalist at the 2020 International Superyacht Society Award Ceremony was an unexpected honor, further validating the hard work and dedication of our team at Newport Yacht and Home.

Your business philosophy seems to revolve around relationships with clients. How do you build and maintain these relationships, and how have they contributed to your success?

I ground my approach to client relationships in honesty, trust, and a personalized understanding of their needs and lifestyles. This deep dive into their world allows me to tailor designs that enhance their yachting experience, creating spaces that reflect their personalities and how they live their lives at sea. The success of Newport Yacht Interiors is largely due to these strong relationships, with clients not just returning, but becoming advocates for my work.

Mentorship and inspiration are powerful tools for empowerment. Who has been your biggest mentor or source of inspiration throughout your journey, and why?

While I’ve had no formal mentor, my mother’s example as a strong, independent woman balancing work and family has been a guiding light. My spirituality and a community of creative, motivated women have also been significant sources of inspiration, pushing me to continuously grow and challenge myself professionally and personally.

Your journey highlights a remarkable ability to wear many hats and swiftly acquire new skills. Could you delve into your approach to efficiently learning so many new things at once?

My diverse role as a designer, entrepreneur, and more stems from a curiosity and a desire to understand the nuts and bolts of my business. This eagerness to learn has enabled me to manage multiple aspects of my company, although I’ve learned the importance of delegating to focus on my strengths. This blend of hands-on involvement and strategic outsourcing has been key to my success.

You’ve mentioned the importance of not comparing yourself to others but rather focusing on your own growth and goals. How has this philosophy impacted your definition of success, and how do you measure your achievements?

A: My career path has been defined by carving out a niche that reflects my unique vision and creativity. Success, to me, is measured by the satisfaction of my clients, the continuous evolution of my design practice, and the joy I find in my work every day. It’s a personal journey, not one measured against the accomplishments of others.

Trust in your inner voice and take steps towards what brings you joy, regardless of the uncertainties.

What advice would you give to women and entrepreneurs facing similar challenges and adversities you encountered on your journey?

Trust in your inner voice and take steps towards what brings you joy, regardless of the uncertainties. Passion, belief in your path, and incremental progress are the keys to overcoming challenges. The journey may be daunting, but with faith and focus, you can create the life you dream of.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for the future, both for yourself and the yacht interior design industry?

My future aspirations are twofold: to continue growing Newport Yacht Interiors, providing exceptional service to our clients, and to gain further recognition in the field, such as our recent finalist position at the International Yacht and Aviation Design Awards. On a broader scale, I hope to contribute to the industry by showcasing the unique and intricate world of yacht interior design, inspiring both clients and peers with innovative, thoughtful designs.
