Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow
April 20 – October 27, 2024
Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston
“Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow is the artist’s first solo museum presentation in the United States. Across an installation, a video, and a series of commissioned sculptures, Erlanger continues her decade-long investigation into what it means to call a planet home. Informed by her interest in “closed worlds”—human-made, climate-controlled environments—the artist has produced all newly commissioned work. Erlanger is converting the gallery into a sculptural landscape comprising distinct yet interrelated zones: a set showcasing her short film Appliance (2024); dioramas of off-world landscapes and impossible architectures; illuminated planet sculptures; and a constellation of arrows piercing the Museum’s brutalist staircase.”

“This exhibition presents a reimagination of Jenny Holzer’s landmark 1989 installation at the Guggenheim. Climbing all six ramps of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed rotunda to the building’s apex, the site-specific installation transforms the building with a display of scrolling texts, featuring selections from her iconic series, such as “Truisms” and “Inflammatory Essays”.”

“Debuting at The Broad with over 90 works made by the artist over the last 20 years, Mickalene Thomas: All About Love is the first major international tour of this pioneering artist’s work. The exhibition highlights how Mickalene Thomas has mastered and innovated within several disciplines, from mixed-media painting and collage to installation and photography. The exhibition shares its title and several of its themes with the pivotal text by feminist author bell hooks, in which love is an active process rooted in healing, carving a path away from domination and towards collective liberation.”

Crafting Modernity: Design in Latin America, 1940-1980

“This exhibition presents these sometimes conflicting visions of modernity proposed by designers of home environments in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela between 1940 and 1980. For some, design was an evolution of local and Indigenous craft traditions, leading to an approach that combined centuries-old artisanal techniques with machine-based methods. For others, design responded to market conditions and local tastes, and was based on available technologies and industrial processes. In this exhibition, objects including furniture, appliances, posters, textiles, and ceramics, as well as a selection of photographs and paintings, will explore these tensions.”

“The Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris presents Les Fleurs d’Yves Saint Laurent. This exhibition, designed by curators Olivier Saillard and Gaël Mamine, follows a first chapter presented at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech from March 2, 2024 to January 5, 2025. For the first time, the two museums have joined forces for a joint program around this major theme in the couturier’s work.”
