A Porcelain Obsession with Valeriya Isyak, Batis Ceramics
Tell us about your favorite material.
My favorite material, and the one I’m currently using for my work, is sculptural porcelain called “Parian,” a type of biscuit porcelain. It has a white marble color, a silky surface, and a translucency and soft sheen that make it stand out from other types of porcelain. The petals become so thin that light passes through them, and viewers don’t always guess right away what my panel is made of—is it paper or feathers? This gives me an opportunity for an internal dialogue with the viewer.
The last thing that inspired you?
The last thing that inspired me was the work of Pierre Bonnard, the subtlest nuances of light in his paintings, where the boundary between the real and utopian world blurs. His rich combinations evoke a sense of taste and smell. Bonnard transferred retrospective memories to canvas, colored by imagination and emotions. I follow this same path when creating my own works.
What I would like to do next…
To work with monumental formats, to create a large project by combining several oversized panels, and to experiment more intricately with color.
Love happens when…
Once, Stanislavsky was asked to describe the verb “to love.” Stanislavsky replied, “To want to touch.” Laying out the panel is a very important meditative process for me; it’s entirely handmade, and I get deep, lasting pleasure from it. That’s how love happened in my life.
