In this edition of Female Design Monarchs, we are celebrating our love for materials in art and interior design with Laurine Malengreau!

Layering silk and wool using the Nuno Silk technique, Laurine Malengreau creates beautiful textile works of art. Combining these natural materials and giving them a new strength fills her with primal joy. In turn, she believes that “art expands the good and the goodness.”

“My inspiration comes from the organic world, from the instinctive dialogue between my fingers and the raw materials they handle. It echoes the powerful energy of life, the singular movement of the elements, the plumage of rare birds.”

After the Belgian creative trained as an art historian and discovered Nuno Silk in Madrid, Laurine moved to Aubusson, France, the tapestry capital, where she resides today.

Creating with the Nuno Silk Technique

“I work barefoot in my large, bright studio in Aubusson, creating freely, with no limits on gesture or size. Using the demanding and unknown Nuno Silk technique (an age-old process of felting originating in Central Asia), I intimately blend natural silk and wool to create wall hangings and non-woven artworks. Pieces destined to cross ages.”

Laurine’s work has been displayed at the iconic Hôtel de Crillon in Paris and the quintessential Homo Faber biennial in Venice. In 2020, she received the Innovative Craftsman award, and in 2024, the Atelier d’art de France award for her region, as well as the prestigious Fellowship Program grant from the Swiss Michaelangelo Foundation. Laurine collaborates with international luxury decorators and private collections to share her heartfelt creations.

The last thing that inspired you?

The last thing that inspired me was the book ‘Zen in the Art of Archery’ by Eugen Herrigel.

My alter ego is…

I don’t know; it’s already a great learning experience to be happy with yourself.

What I would like to do next…

Next, I’d like to create a nomadic, participatory exhibition, combining the cultures of the people I’ve met on my travels.

Love happens when…

Love is when, in the present moment, I consciously realise the beauty of what is around me.
