Nestled in the heart of a bustling city, Cantinho do Avillez offers a slice of Portugal that tantalizes the palate and soothes the soul. Known for its creative takes on Portuguese cuisine, this restaurant promises a journey of flavors—and it truly delivered during my visit. 

From the moment I stepped in, the ambiance set the tone for an unforgettable evening. A cozy yet elegant space, Cantinho do Avillez Porto blends rustic charm with contemporary sophistication. The soft lighting and welcoming staff made me feel instantly at ease, ready to dive into the culinary adventure ahead. 

The Mind Behind the Flavor 

The culinary brilliance of Cantinho do Avillez can be traced back to its founder, José Avillez, a towering figure in Portuguese gastronomy. Avillez’s mission is clear: to celebrate and elevate Portuguese cuisine while making Portugal a global gastronomic destination. His entrepreneurial spirit and passion for innovation have earned him widespread acclaim, cementing his status as one of the country’s most celebrated chefs. 

Beyond Cantinho do Avillez, José Avillez operates a constellation of restaurants in Lisbon, Porto, Cascais, Dubai, and Macau. Each venue tells a different story, showcasing unique concepts while maintaining an unwavering dedication to culinary excellence. In 2023, he expanded his vision with Casa Nova – The Lake Farmhouse, a stunning estate in Alentejo. This retreat, co-founded with his wife, Sofia Ulrich, is a haven of comfort, privacy, and breathtaking views—a true reflection of Avillez’s flair for creating memorable experiences. 

His influence extends beyond the kitchen. José Avillez has graced the pages of numerous books, appeared on television and radio programs, and shared his expertise as an author, presenter, and judge. His dedication to Portuguese gastronomy is a testament to his love for his craft and his country. 

The Appetizer Symphony

The meal began with two standout appetizers: Prawns ‘à Bulhão Pato’ and an LT Egg. The prawns, bathed in a rich, garlicky sauce with hints of cilantro, were a revelation. Each bite was a harmonious balance of freshness and warmth, and the sauce begged to be mopped up with crusty bread. 

The LT Egg was an unexpected delight. Crispy on the outside yet perfectly soft within, it delivered a play of textures that kept me intrigued. The combination of creamy yolk and delicate seasoning was the kind of innovation that set Cantinho do Avillez apart.

Main Courses Worth Remembering 

The main courses took the experience to new heights. I opted for the Roasted Octopus and the Mushroom Risotto with Basil, and neither disappointed. The octopus was masterfully prepared, tender yet retaining a pleasant chew. Served with a comforting potato and tomato bread mash, a drizzle of basil olive oil, and a touch of cilantro, it was a dish that celebrated simplicity and bold flavors in equal measure. The addition of cottage cheese brought an unexpected creaminess that tied the elements together. 

The Mushroom Risotto was a comforting embrace of earthy flavors. The Carnaroli rice was cooked to perfection, enveloped in a rich, creamy sauce featuring sautéed Portobello mushrooms and adorned with Parmesan shavings. The basil added a refreshing herbaceous note, making every spoonful a comforting yet refined delight. 

A Sweet Farewell

As the evening drew to a close, dessert arrived in the form of a decadent chocolate cake with strawberry ice cream. The cake struck the perfect balance: its sweetness was rich without being cloying. Paired with the light, fruity freshness of the strawberry ice cream, it was the ideal conclusion to an exceptional meal. Each bite felt like a celebration—a fitting end to a symphony of flavors. 

Final Thoughts 

Dining at Cantinho do Avillez Porto was more than just a meal; it was an experience. With José Avillez’s visionary approach to Portuguese gastronomy, this restaurant is a shining example of his commitment to his craft.
